117.The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they
are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they
were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its
office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this
work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home
office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders,
and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as
paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply
departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."
Merely depended on some inadequate evidences such as a recent survey which reports over 70 percent of respondents are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past and a trend of increasing office-supply, the speaker concludes that Valu-Mart’s office-supply departments will become the most profitable component by increasing the stock of home office machines and office-supplies. However, this is a one-sided argument, because there are many aspects that the writer has overlooked or chosen to ignore.
At the first place, to support his or her views, the speaker cites a recent survey which reports over 70 percent of respondents are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. But, in actually, I cannot find any information about the reliability of the survey. The speaker fails to show some information such as how many people the survey asked, and what these individuals personal condition are, including job, age, for example. If the participants of this survey are very small, then over 70 percent of respondents are also a few groups of people, and that sample is unjust to representative of all people, at the same time, the result of this survey is worthless. If the respondents are all just take some part-time jobs which not require employees to work at company, the result of this survey is also insufficient.
Secondly, the argument mentions that we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines. But the speaker does not give us some reliable information about the trend. Maybe that trend is an illusion which just appears in the flourish of economy of whole society. Moreover, it is not necessary that increasing the stock of home office machines and office supplies can make great benefits to office-supply departments of Valu-Mart store. There is no evidence and information to interpret that the people, especially those employees whose salary are not considerable high, would buy our office machines or office-supplies. If the people do not purchase of those office machines and office-supplies rapidly, the increasing stock might lead our money to a deadlock, and our company's financial system would be congealed by those office machines and office-supplies which can not be sell. This is a dangerous condition for a company.
Finally, whether a store can make profits always depends on its commodity's quality, price and the service of shop. The author asserts that the office-supply departments will become the most profitable component just through increasing the stock of office machines and office-supplies is unfounded assumption, obviously. The writer ignores the qualities and prices of office machines and office-supplies. If the price is higher beyond people's ability of purchase, they also would not buy these machines even though these machines have high qualities. Furthermore, the speaker also ignores the adversary of Valu-Mart, if these adversaries sales that office machines and office-supplies earlier than Valu-Mart, Valu-Mart might have difficulties to let people believe its commodities.
To sum up, only after evaluating all facts which discussed above, it is adequate that our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores. |
