TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 550 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-4-5 12:44:14
According to the author, tradition and modernization cannot exist at the same time and thus we should choose either of them. However in my point of view, they are not enemies but friends that can live together. Of course, when the tradition is of no use or even harmful, we should get rid of it while under most circumstances, they have been rooted in our daily lives and are helpful.
To begin with, some traditions have not altered compared with the past and exist in our lives. As for many customs, they begun hundreds and thousands of years ago and today they are still parts of our lives. They have become our culture. For instance, Chinese eat rice dumpling on DuanWu Festival in honor of QuYuan, a great patriotic poet who suicided in Yangtze River, as our ancestors did. Also, Japanese go to the temple on January 1st every year, which begun hundreds of years ago. And the custom that parents in western countries give their children Christmas presents also has a long history. We cannot live without these traditions.
However, I concede that tradition and modernization do conflict in some aspects. Hand workshop gradually disappeared since automation has been applied to manufacturing. Lots of people choose to use E-mails rather than traditional letters because they are faster and more convenient. Moreover, people prefer traveling to other places by plane and train now when considering their swiftness. Because these new inventions have appeared and have been applied to our lives, we seem to choose them to make our lives more efficient and more convenient. We cannot deny the benefits modernization has brought to us, but that does not necessarily mean that we totally reject tradition. We just choose modernization in some aspects.
While tradition may be inferior to modernization in some areas that have been mentioned above, they are beneficial to current lives in many other aspects. For example, most of our moral fortunes derived from tradition. Chinese learn to take good care of the old and also love the young a lot like their ancestors did. American keep in mind that they should always thank to those who have helped them when they are in need from their ancestors, which is reflected through the fact that they have keep Thanksgiving Day. These traditions have oriented us to behave in the right way. But when coming to some traditions that are of no use or harmful to our society, we should no longer conform to them such as in many districts, people once thought that men were born superior to women, which should be rejected today. But we have to concede that traditions do good to current societies under most circumstances and they are compatible with our lives today.
What's more, since lots of things are gradually developed, their current achievements cannot be isolated from traditions. For instance, scientific researches, medical areas, arts and other aspects have their systems, which include the development process from the past. In these areas, tradition and modernization cannot be clearly divided into two parts.
In conclusion, tradition and modernization are actually compatible under most circumstances while conflict in some areas. We should place emphasis on the traditions that are beneficial to our current lives and abandon those are out of date or even harmful.
