TOPIC: ARGUMENT30 - According to information recently reported in the Eliottown Gazette, the number of people who travel to Eliottown has increased significantly over the past several years. So far this year over 100,000 people have arrived on flights to Eliottown's airport, compared with only 80,000 last year and 40,000 the year before. Eliottown's train station has received more than 50,000 passengers this year, compared with less than 40,000 last year and 20,000 the year before. Clearly tourism in Eliottown has been increasing, thanks to the new Central Park and Museum of Modern Art that opened last year. Therefore, the funding for the park and museum should be increased significantly.

Before increase the funding for the park and museum, the government should reconsider whether this method can improve their tourism. I do not think this argument is convincing enough to make this investment.
First, there is no evidence showing the passages arrived Elittown Gazette (EG) is increasing. There maybe some other reasons that passages increasing in Eliottown's airport other than the tourism's increasing. Maybe, another airport in EG is destroyed or more people chose travelling by plane instead of by train, cars, or other vehicles. If the totally number in the EG has been declined, the passages in EG is actually declined instead of increased mentioned by the speaker. So, without that totally statistics, it is not wise to make hasty assertion.
Even if the totally number of passages in EG is increased, it dose not mean the tourism has been increasing. Travelers going to EG may have other reasons besides for a tour, maybe for going to the college, visiting their friends or just changing planes in EG's airport. To indicate number of tourism in EG, counting passages is not the best way. The speaker should counting the visitors in all the famous places in EG rather than the airport's passages.
Even if the number of tourists in EG is increasing, it may not owe to the new Central Park and Museum of Modern Art that opened last year. EG may have other great places like the breach, the former palaces or a new Disneyland. The speaker did not give any evidence to indicate it is the new Central Park and Museum of Modern Art that attribute to the tourism increase. There is a self-contradiction here. The speaker said the passages in EG are increased during last three years as 40,000, 80,000, 100,000, but the new Central Park and Museum of Modern Art are opened last year. Does that mean the tourism increase has nothing to do with the new Central Park and Museum of Modern Art?
The EG government should find the accurate statistics to indicate whether their tourism is increased and make a survey to understand what measure can effectively help them increasing their tourism. |
