207"Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
Culture, in my opinion, is rooted in the difference of various regions and in the difference of diverse historical periods. Based on this assertion, characterized by those differences, rituals and ceremonies can assist to define a culture, which can also help people to find the sense of whom they are. However, as differences come from a multitudes of aspects, rituals and ceremonies are not the unique way.
To begin with, rituals and ceremonies are vital in establishing and distinguishing a culture, thus enhancing people's social sense of whom they are. Emerged from our ancients, it is a symbol of our time -honored traditional culture to hold diverse rituals and ceremonies. In the Tibet China, after an individual dies, other people would put his body on the mountain to feed a kind of bird, in an attempt to send the death to the heaven. Brutal and unreasonable to us, it is a special culture, and to the people in Tibet, it stands their sense of whom they are. Moreover, culture also stems from the difference. This is especially true between the eastern culture and the western culture. In the religion realm, the western people will go to the church to pay respect to the god while the eastern will come to the temple to worship the Bodhisattva. Either of them stands a kind of culture - the former is Christianism; the latter is Buddhism. And to the region itself, it is a convey of people's sense of whom they are.
Nevertheless, preserving cultural identity, a host of other avenues also figure prominently in avoiding an individual being plunged into a dilemma of losing himself in the society. Language, generally an ancient and traditional art, serves as every nation's unique and distinguished culture. When people are speaking their won languages, they cannot help to being proud of whom they are and where they are from. Another remarkable culture is the diverse ethical clothes which range from the business suit to the sun yat sen's uniform, from the white clothes to the black and even colorful ones. Consequently, different clothes give birth to various cultures. Certain other essentials including the customs and habits also contribute to the emerging of a culture and to the people's understanding of whom they are. Just as there are 56 nations in China, the diversity of their unique languages, clothes and customs collaborate to pave the way to the multicultural country - China. Only can we distinguish the cultural difference between us and the other nations, will we recognize that we belong to a special group and will we feel the sense of who we are.
In addition, while culture serves as a mount of fortune which should be memorized by us offspring, it doesn't amount to that we should apply every culture including the rituals and ceremonies to our today's life blindly and without choice. Similarly, with the development of society, when it comes to the personal sense of whom we are, certain old-fashioned and unsuitable traditional conception should be forbidden today; otherwise, it will be counterproductive to the development of society. For example, in the ancient China, people would have to kneel down when they meet the emperor to show their respects. However, in today's society pursuing democracy, this ceremony will not be acknowledged by the public.
To sum up, rituals and ceremonies facilitate the definition of a culture and bring us the sense of whom we are, but they are not the unique way as the culture is a complex issue which is composed of numerous aspects. Moreover, we are not supposed to pursue every ritual and ceremony blindly in an attempt to discover our roles in the society, for some of them are unsuitable now.
