Agree/disagree: university students should be required to take basic science classes even they are not part of the field of the study.

Personally speaking, I strongly agree with that university students should be required to study basic science knowledge even though they are not majored in science. There are a couple of reasons.

First of all, taking basic science classes could enrich the knowledge of university students and cultivate their interests towards science even they do not belong to the field of science. Basic science knowledge is quite related to our daily lives. Studying this kind of knowledge, we could understand our lives deeply and avoid some basic mistakes. Take alcohol as an example. If we know the basic knowledge about alcohol, we never use water to extinguish the fire caused by alcohol. This is the fundamental knowledge in a science class. Furthermore, a lot of students would become interested in science once they get to know what is about science. For instance, one of my teachers, who has achieved a lot of honors in Materials Science area, began to take interested in materials occasionally once he joined a class about material science. So science class is quite necessary for university students.

Moreover, with science knowledge, students’ thoughts would become more logical and rational. It is well known that students who are majored in science behave more logical and rational compared with liberal arts students. Due to the instruction of science, students tend to consider both the positive and negative aspect of one thing, thus helping them make a comprehensive understanding about it and behave logically and rationally. This is an important reason that many leaders of our country are from the science realm. Therefore, taking science classes would help to make students consider more logical and comprehensive.

In sum, taking science classes would not only cultivate students’ interests towards science, but also help them think logical and rational. Therefore, it is necessary for university students to take classes about science.
