Is it more important for a teacher to help students gain self-confidence than to teach specific knowledge?

People succeed not merely because they have certain skills or mass knowledge.Of all the possible characteristics that can affect one's success, I strongly agree the statement that a teacher should help students gain confidence rather than teaching specific knowledge, as the following reasons.

Firstly，self-confidence is the one the most important characters which lead people to success. The role of a teacher and a school is to help students to learn how to live and work in the complex society. So the foremost goal for a student is to be a man, then to be a knowledgeable man. It is impossible for a student to achieve success if he or she is self-contempt even possess abundant knowledge.On the contrary, a confident person rerly gives up. When he or she fails he or she will try again and again until wins. Bill Gates is a crucial example in my opinion. Image that if he did not have strong self-confidence, could he made the decision to quit the Harvard university which is almost all the students' dream school. In a word, if you gain self-confidence, you have strided the first step to success.
  
Furthermore, to gain self-confidence is more important than teach knowledge for a teacher. As we know, we could study ourselves nowadays by a variety of technologies such like computers, MP3 and so on. The self-study capacity is more and more important especially in  university period and people's further lives. However, there is no tool can teach students self-confidence all over the world. That is why the status of teachers is not be replaced by modern technologies. What's more, self-confidence is the prerequisite to study knowledge well for students. Also take Bill Gates for example, it is sure that the strong self-confidence drived him to learn professional knowledge well all by himself. So teachers who focus more on helping students to gain self-confidence could also release their own burden.

Nevertheless, it is too hard for a teacher to foster all students' self-confidence. As we know, one teacher always teaches about forty students or even more at one time. A teacher is able to teach the culture knowledge at one time, however, it is impossible for a teacher to arrange the education plan for each student's personality in mental field. In this aspect, parents are more suit for build children's self-confidence because they know their children well and live longer with their children. The target to help students gain self-confidence should be accomplished both by teachers and parents.

To sum up, the character of self-confidence is so important in students' maturing process that teachers should pursue the more effective and efficient ways in education.
