ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Words:518. TIME: 2:03:34.
The speaker claims that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. It might be attempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that each student has different needs and interests, and he or she would be totally motivated to study through a specifically designed education. However, the speaker overlooks the considerable significance of general education and the inherent flaws of the specifically designed education.
First of all, I do concede that an educational system should take into account the specific needs and interests of each student to fully develop their distinct talent and potential. After all, the general education does not fit for those quite a few special ones with marvelous genius who achieve his success actually by the specifically designed education. A convictive example is W.A. Mozart, a child musical prodigy, who became a composer at the age of just six and was finally named the top musicians. But obviously he could not go this far without his father’s specifically designed education at his early ages. This illustrates the specifically designed education is truly effective for those extraordinary ones.
However, the speaker arbitrarily asserts that only and just only a specifically designed education will truly benefit each student. This neglects the equal or even greater importance of general education. Primary and secondary students study the same curriculum from which they get their basic knowledge which eventually acts as a catalyst for the finding and forming of their interests. What is more, general education brings up the majority of the luminaries. We can take Albert Einstein as a convincing example. The great physicist set up a new era for physics and one of those factors what contribute to his success is his systematic and regular education accepted by him at ordinary school and university. So we can presume that general education is as or even more important as specifically designed education and also truly effective.
Moreover, we could not possibly offer that large number of public resources to meet so many student’s various needs and interests. After all, public resources can not supply enough teachers and facilities for the students at the existing general education system. How do we design the new education system which precisely reflects and satisfy each student’s needs and interests is another thorny problem. And this naturally consumes our scarce public resources. To this extent, it is unfeasible for specifically designed education for students all.More importantly, though we differ from each other, and at the same time we are quite similar with each other. So general education which does reflect not only students’ needs and interests but the society’s is actually more effective for the society operation as a whole. In other words, specifically designed education is not truly effective.
In the final analysis, I agree with the speaker insofar as specifically designed education is truly effective for those special ones with distinct talent and potential. However, I hold a strong position that we only need general education for most of our students for the reason that it is truly effective for most students and for the society as a whole.
