university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most
persistent social problems."

提纲
建一所“全球大学”，用处不是很大
1.全球性问题，比如艾滋病防治，需要全人类共同努力，不是少数几个人能解决的。
“艾滋病专业”？
2.即使真有突出贡献的，也不是大学能培养出来的。医学科学家，“全球医科大学”还可以。社会
活动家，领袖级人物。
3.在培养年轻人全球意识上有点儿作用，从人类整体大局思考问题，矢志于造福全人类的人才。但
完全可以通过其他方式培养全球意识。
从教育着手仅仅是辅助。真把教育作为突破口，建大学这个法子也不对路。

Facing with so many serious global social problems, such as the environment pollution,
the spread of AIDS, the threaten of nuclear war, and so on, human beings are trying to
help themselves out by various methods they could figure out, among which establishing
a global university is proposed as a choice. However, as long as I can see, even if
such a university is established and functioning well, it will not help very much to
solve the world's most persistent social problems.
The solution of any global social problem requires people in different sorts of areas
all over the world, even the entire human beings to work hard together, which means
merely a group of "experts" can not deal with it at all. Take the prevention of AIDS's
world spreading for example, not only tens of thousands of doctors, nurse, medical
scientists, volunteers should pay their most efforts, but also a lot of governments,
NGOs, and medicine manufactories must get involved to cooperate together. Students of a
university, no matter how well they are designed to solve the AIDS problem, will not
have the capacity of handling such a huge and complicated project. What's more, what
kind of education would make the students so well "designed"---- that each of them is
expert in not only medical science, nursing, biology, but also government
administration, enterprise organization, and other relevant professions? It's only an
unrealistic imagination to construct an "AIDS department".
Even if there are a number of individuals who will make outstanding contribution in the
process of solving the world' social problems, the advent of these people have little
necessary relationship with the "global university". If one day a medical scientist
invents some special medicine curing the AIDS, that does not means the establishment of
the "global university" mentioned previously helps to increase the probability of such
an event, except that it is actually a "global medical university". Also, excellent
political leaders and social activists may play an important role in solving social
problems, but again they are trained and picked out from practices, and would come from
any universities.
Admittedly, the establishment of a global university can help to develop a sort of
global awareness among young people. Students in this university will learn to think
and act from the consideration of the whole world, and that should more or less help to
make a better world in the future. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of other methods
capable of achieving such purpose. Any government could invest more resources to the
existing universities to improve the global awareness education of the students, as
long as it has the willingness and resources to support the development of a global
university, and the effect shall be greater because more students will become ambitious
of serving for the welfare of the entire human race.
The solution of today's most persistent global social problems involves so much
complication and difficulty that it requires all people in all areas and nations to act
together. If we want to get some good help from the area of education in solving these
problems, the right way is to inform and influence as many students as possible around
the whole world. After all, an entire generation of intellectual, responsible young
people is the hope of world. No illusion should be placed on the approach of just
picking up some geniuses, educating them, and then waiting for years until they grow up
to play the superman to save the world.
