"Most societies do not take their greatest thinkers seriously, even when they claim to admire them."
很多社会并不重视思想家,即使社会宣称很景仰这些思想家。
Genius thinkers, who propose great ideas to promote the development of the society, play an important role. People always claim to admire the greatest thinkers and their achievement to the world, but, in action, they choose to ignore them. Many of citizens even do not know who the greatest thinkers are. Thus, we can't help to ponder why those greatest thinkers are always neglected since their achievements affect the society a lot.
With more and more rapid life pace, most people are occupied everyday. They rush to get up, have meals, go to work, make a living and return home, like a spinning top. They are eager to support their family, raise children and purchase better houses and cars. However, the greatest thinker is totally different. No matter what society they are in, they all have high intelligence, wide-range of knowledge, predictive view to certain issue, durable hardworking and sometime even the eccentric temper. What they pursue is the dependent thinking and great achievement in study rather than money. This leads them to be isolated from the ordinary people.
Secondly, the idea of the greatest thinker always can not be accepted by most people, since it seems to be critical, special and violating the common moral. A proper example is about one of famous Chinese thinkers--Lu Xun who saw the people's numb to the traditional Chinese feudalism and revolution and strongly expected to rescue them. He, thus, abandoned his study of medicine in Japanese and turned to be an author to waken citizen in spirit by writing. His proposed lots of critical ideas but were not understood and accepted by common people in that society. The authority even tried to quell him.
Thirdly, with the changing of times and the variance of notions, some intellectuals who were respected in the ancient time are not admired by common people anymore. A case in this point is Confucius who is considered the greatest of the ancient Chinese sages. In the ancient time, many people prayed to be the apprentice of Confucius and to learn from him. His thoughts were scattered and became morality in the whole China. However, seldom people would mention Confucius and his thoughts nowadays, especially the young generation, although his ideas are still useful in the life.
In sum, it’s a great tragedy that greatest thinkers are not taken seriously by most societies. They seem to be not understood properly by most people. The society should give them enough space to let their great thoughts glaring.
