"Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics. "

No one can deny that technologies have the power to change every aspect of our lives; once certain technologies are invented, our lives are no longer what they were before. So it is understandable that technologies can have more or less impact on our customs and ethics. However, the core of our customs and the foundation of our ethics are never challenged by technologies.

The core of our customs, which roots deeply in the essence of our culture, is never impaired by technologies, although new technologies may enable or compel us to perform our customs in different ways. A case in point is the New Year Festival. Although some Chinese people claim that the Spring Festival is no longer what it was, because instead of visiting our friends, we express our greetings on the phone nowadays. However, we do celebrate the Spring Festival, no matter we are in the pre-industrial times or the post-industrial times. Another example is the family. We used to live with our parents or even grandparents when technologies are not so advanced and the pace of life is not so accelerated. However, with the heated development of modern technologies and the acceleration of the pace of our lives, we have to limit the scale of the family so that we can be more mobile and thus more adaptable to the society of today. Yet, the family is still the most important place that can provide us with comfort and the courage to move ahead, which is the very reason why we all live in "families".  So it is safe to say that although technologies can influence social customs, they can never shake the foot of it.

And although technologies sometimes can enable us to see the world in a different way, the very foundation of ethics, which derives from the conscience lying in every human being's heart, is never impaired by any technology. It is true that technologies have the potential to give rise to a series of changes that might lead to the alteration of our minds towards particular things. For example, modern technologies render the development to depend more on intelligence than on physical strength.  Such a change provides the women with more opportunities to demonstrate their capacities because although they are generally weaker than men in physical strength, they are no less intellectual than them. And such demonstrations have greatly altered the mind of some people who previous considered women to be inferior or even only an addition to men.  However, the essence of ethics, such as honesty, fidelity to friends and family, respect for others, and patriotism are in our blood since the ancient times. No matter how fast technology develops, they are never affected, and I believe they will never be altered in the future.

To sum up, I agree that technologies can influence our social customs and ethics to certain degrees because technologies can change the way we perform our customs or alter our minds about particular aspects of our life. However, I strongly disagree with the assertion that technologies are power enough to determine social customs, the core of which roots in the essence of our culture, or the ethics, the foundation of which derives from the conscience of our heart.

觉得还想再深入了解custom和ethics的概念,具体指什么?
还有custom,culture,ethics,moral standards这几个词到底具体的范畴是什么?

PS：social custom——社会风俗，ethic——伦理道德
      moral standard——道德标准，culture——文化
相对来说moral standard没有ethic层面来的高吧，custom也没有culture感觉阳春白雪啊～～
我还很菜的说，继续讨论啦～～

3， MM 对于custom的例子：
the spring festival 和 family structure 用的很好。
然而，对于ethic 的例子： 女性的例子好象有点牵强。
我提议是： 随着技术的发展，人们更追求物质上奢侈，更追求金钱至少~~不过这样的道德观念好象是转变了哦~`

对于文章的语言按照我现在这水平真的没有什么可以挑刺的了
就文章的结构而言，看到这个题目时没有想很多，但是文章看着看着就觉得这题目很难阐述啊~~其实难点就在于那两个词的精确释义，custom--established socially accepted practice;ethic--a system of moral behavior.对于这些抽象的概念，要在短时间内给出例证实在不容易。考虑custom段中，是不是也可以举wedding的风俗“something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”来说明，这些风俗也不是科技发展可以改变的。ethic段中的妇女地位问题，好像也不能归结为ethic类，能否举一些公认的道德层面上的例子呢~~
这个问题确实比较难啊~~咱们再多讨论讨论吧
