I partly agree with the speaker's assertion that the nonmainstream area of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling and the like places the significant role in meeting the certain needs of public and can not be replaced by mainstream science since the long-term subsistence of nonmainstream studies always has its own objective reason. However, we can not lose sight about the destructive hazard that posed by such nonmainstream studies.

First of all, the initiation of nonmainstream study such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits lie in the curiosity and innocence of human beings towards the unknown nature world. The strange problems and phenomenon can not be explained and resolved by the scientific research at that time, which promote the advance of nonmainstream study. For instance, people are interested in the ever-changing position of stars in the dark sky, unfortunately it is beyond the scale of scientific knowledge available. So some of them generated the new study of astrology within which people hold the view that the changing position of stars can tell the prediction or sign of future. Moreover, the believes in the area such as astrology ,fortune-telling and so force have been hold deeply in people's mind during centuries of evolution and even permeated into the realm of culture and religion. That's why given the detailed explanation of modern science about the unknown problems and phenomenon of ancient time, people are still inclined to accept those nonmainstream areas of inquiry as the essential traditional custom or religious worship. For that matter, we can see one aspect of nonmainstream study's function that can address the needs of human beings which can not be replaced by science research.

Secondly, such nonmainstream study also offer people with spiritual comfort that can help them escape from the harsh reality. In different time period of history, people suffered from various depressions according to the social ills. Facing the unsatisfied needs and the even the desperation towards the real world, people then resorted to some kinds of fortune-telling to get temporary comfort. Besides, people also depend on paranormal pursuit to let out their indignation and discontentment. For instance, many people believe that any individual who pose great disasters and suffering to other people would be thrown into hell after death, where they deserve eternal torture and punishment. Such supposed consequence of evildoers would ease their indignation and give them spiritual comfort. For that matter, the nonmainstream study also plays a vital role in the spiritual live of human beings.

However, the significance of nonmainstream inquiry can not blind us to its far more adverse influence on our daily live since all of the prediction or evaluation provide by their study are no more than imagination and guess without scientific analysis. If we were fully guided by them, probably we would experience failures. There might be the actual case that once a person got the negative sign about his fate from the fortune-telling, he would probably, given that he was loyally hold the value of fortune-telling, lose heart and give in then lead a passive life afterward. However, as the modern science telling us, there is no such paranormal power that can dominate our live and fate. And actually, our fate lies in the hands of ourselves, which means, what kind of life you want to lead in the future greatly depends on you attitude towards the live. Therefore, it appears to be dangerous if one solely rests on the paranormal strength which studied by nonmainstream research.

In sum, we have to admit the consequence role of nonmainstream inquiry in reference to meeting the certain needs of human beings when taking into account the origin of such study. Nevertheless, we should keep an objective mind and never lose sight of the destructive influence brought by nonmainstream study for their scant in rational analysis on the reality.
