I agree with the speaker's assertion insofar as these nonmainstream inquiry indeed can satisfy some psychological need, however, these nonmainstream inquiry are not very rooted in reason, thus the detriment they caused outweigh the benefit people can receive from them.

Admittedly, the nonmainstream inquiry can meet some of the psychological need of human being. In ancient time, the science and technology are not very advanced, and many phenomena can not be explained scientifically and reasonably by mainstream inquiry. Thus these inquiries such as astrology and fortune-telling played a key role in that time to explain the natural phenomena. For example, people do not know why it is raining and they do not understand the phenomena of the lightning and thunder. Thus some explanation was created by the nonmainstream inquiries that the raining and lightning is the rage of the God and God is taking use of the lack of raining to punish us for our wrongdoing.

And nowadays with the development of the science and technology, these inquiry of astrology and fortune-telling and so on have become the nonmainstream, but they still have some role to meet the psychological need of human beings. One such need springs from the uncertain nature which our world has. Many people will always confront to many difficult choices in the road of life, they will be regret when the choice they make turns out to be a poor and dissatisfied one. Thus people who want to avoid this uncertainty will resort to the nonmainstream inquiry to direct a "bright way" for them. Another need comes from the fact that human beings are immortal. No one can escape from the fate of death, no matter how great or moderate he/she is. People who want to connect and contact with their dead lovers and relatives will have to seek for the help to the psychic and paranormal pursuits. In short, the nonmainstream inquiry can play a vital role not only in our ancient time when the mainstream inquiry has not been very developed to explain the world but also to satisfy some kind of psychological need of human being in the modern society.

However, even if the nonmainstream inquiry can satisfy some of the human being' need, the researching and relying on these inquiry should not be encouraged in our modern society in which the science and technology has developed rapidly.

Firstly, the nonmainstream inquiries are not very rooted in reason and science. No one can prove or disprove the effectiveness of the nonmainstream inquiries. How can one examine and inspect whether some unfortunate things will really happen if he/she did not live the life by the way that the inquiries advised them not to? If they have indeed avoided some serious disasters which will impose on them by their fate is a question which can not been known forever. Thus perhaps the human being is just a victim which has been cheated by the player and people who make a living by these nonmainstream inquires.

Furthermore, if people are too believed and confident to the nonmainstream inquiry, they may be prone to make the decision of giving up in their life. After all, according to the theory of these inquiries, the human being should always yield to the strength of God----- Man propose, God dispose as the saying goes. Therefore the fate of human beings have been already decided by our powerful God, it is useless for us to make our effort to struggle for our dream and life. This kind of effect will be deleterious to the individuals. The reality of world tells me that no one can succeed without painstaking effort and the fate of the human beings is in the hand of human being themselves instead of the God.

The last but not least, the nonmainstream inquiries will also cause some damage in the societal level. People are informed that the human being's lives are given by God and if they can sacrifice for the God they can have better lifves in next lifetime. Thus many people follow the advice and are willing to contribute their precious lives for the God in the Holy war. That is the root of devil of many terrorism and suicide-bombing in contemporary society, which endangers the public safety of many people. We will be still startled and trembled when we think of the disaster of "9.11" which happen in World Trade Organization in American in 2001.

To sum up, although the nonmainstream inquiries can indeed satisfy some kind of psychological need of human being, it actually causes more detriment than the benefit people can get. Our society should educate its citizen more with scientific knowledge rather than with these nonmainstream inquiries, even our society can not prohibit the development of them according to our principle of freedom of belief, at least its research and development should not be encouraged
