48"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
提纲: 历史名人很重要
有些被遗忘的人物也应该正名
两者不存在根本矛盾,不应该机械的分裂开谈孰是孰非
As a famous English apothegm has it," History is the news of yesterday." In a normal coverage, we will usually find a necessary element--figure. People create history and history also moulds all kinds of people.
In my opinion, we should not only give enough attention to the famous celebrities who took part in the significant events but also try to find out the meaning that the people who have long been forgotten deserve.
In respective of a usual historic method and view, famous few have always been the dominant power in a momentous event or historical trend, which should not be denied in most of the cases. For example, the most influential event in the 20th century is the Second World War with no doubt. Actually, Adolph Hitler is the key person who waged this disaster and on the other hand, Winston Churchill, F.Roosevelt as well as Starling who may probably help to save many countries and lead them to the final victory also play a vital role in the war. No one can neglect that certain people's certain action or judgment will help change the trend of a period of history, more or less, carry it into a different direction. Based on the numerous instances and references we can look into, we can conclude that the famous few is one of the most effective powers influencing the human history, no matter positive or negative.
Nevertheless, this conclusion should not obliterate the contribution of some people who really changed the history but gained no fame or relatively less fame in the end. By no means can we forget these people and fortunately, there has emerged a certain kind of history research school that aims at exploring and surveying those who might be forgotten by the history. This way is dominated by certain and popular thought that we should pay enough attention to the periphery. For instance, everybody knows that Napoleon is the most famous leader of the early 19th century and a lot of historians have given their comments that he changed the European history or he deepens the capitalization of many European countries by his army. However, this is only one respect of the truth that actually Napoleon's enemies like Russian czar Alexander I or the Austrian Prime Minister Meyer finally won the war against France. What's more, their efforts to stop Napoleon and destroy his reforming may had a more profound influence on the modern history because all their cruel policies have been the most important impetus that stimulated a more profound and extensive revolution over the whole European, which contributes to the final and thorough victory of the capitalism. History might be made up of those famous few, but it will never be the same with the famous few only. We must pay more endeavors to find out those who have long been forgotten but may deserve a fresh focus in fact.
Finally, our vision may become extremely isolated if we insist on dividing this problem into two contrary aspects. Such attempt may cause a meaning less dilemma that makes our historical judgment myopic. Famous few have been remembered up till now but we can not consider our history as a Hollywood movie that is always based on the performance of some shining movie stars. Nonetheless, it gives no verification for our cynical attitude to try to reread and destruct the classical views of the history, which is made of meaningless intention to explore the useless anecdotes in order to rewrite the history into a strange way blindly.
In sum, as a objective observer of the human history, we had better hold an similarly objective and diversifying stand to judge the history. Famous few and some people who might have been forgotten write the history altogether, furthermore, we can not give any hasty conclusion about who may play a more significant part in certain events with out any specific research merely based on out tuition or preference. |
