TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
1.不可否认,新手由于他们的热情和事物对他们的促使能够使他们获得成果获重大发现。
2.同时,我们也不能低估专家的能力
3.在发现面前,新手和专家是平等的。而如果对比谁会更有优势,需要考虑其它因素。
===================================================
I do not degree with the speaker's claims. It is true that sometimes the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries, in particular in areas where have recently been significant developments. This, however, does not indicate that the beginner is always more likely than the expert to make discoveries. Other factors may also be important.
There is no denying that beginners can achieve a lot or even make important discoveries if they are enthusiastic about what they do and if they are highly motivated to do what they do. Compared with the expert, beginners have no or a little limited and definitive conceptions in their minds. Moreover, not refined by what is right and what is wrong or what may be done and what may not be done, the beginner can think outside the box and bring about breakthroughs. Consider, for example, as a German meteorologist Alfred Wegener advocated an important theory in geology known as continental drift. After many years, it is approved that continental drift became an important part of geology. Although he is an expert in meteorology, he is a new comer in geology. Of course, due to this, he can propose the new theory different from the fluid theory. This example illustrates that although the beginner may not know a lot knowledge in the field, he or she always have great interests and get rid of the ideologism to explore the unknown, through this he or she can get unexpected results. On the contrary, the expert gets accustomed to research in the old system in his or her field so that it is impossible to give up the existed theory or system to think about the question. Therefore, under this condition we can say that the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries.
However, we do not underestimate the power of the expert to discover new things in any field of inquiry. Experts have a wild-broad mind and better know the direction of the research in the future in their field. Hence, they can make important discoveries in terms of their experience and knowledge in their field. For instance, thank to his accurate observation and experience, Fleming discovered the ‘contaminated’ virus that his assistant planned to throw out. If his assistant had thrown out the ‘contaminated’ virus, that Penicillin would be found need a long period. This can tell us that under many condition, experts can readily make important discoveries in terms of their experience and accurate observation.
Whether they are beginners with great passionate and interests or experts with experience, they are equal to making discoveries. Who is on earth more likely to make important discoveries? In my opinion, other factors should be considered, such as careful and honest attitude. Can a careless researcher who may omit an important part or is wrong with data make important discoveries? If a scientist, no matter a beginner or the expert, is a dishonest person and makes fake data in experiment, does he make important discoveries? The answer is certainly no. Even though he made important discoveries, people quickly realized his cheating action. Like Dr. Hwang, a South Korean veterinary researcher who had climbed to a pinnacle of international visibility, quickly go down from the top of mountain because of the fake data in his experimental results.
In conclusion, although the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries sometimes, we do not overlook the expert's experience accumulated in the process of work. Therefore, the beginner and the expert have their disadvantages and advantages, both are equal to making important discoveries. |
