topic:The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper.
"The librarians in our town's school system have reported that the number of trips that our students make to their school library on a voluntary basis has decreased significantly in recent years. For example, the average seventh-grade student visited the school library five times last year, but four of those visits were part of required classroom activities. This shows that our students are reading less than in the past. To address this problem, our town needs to improve the atmosphere of the libraries so that they will be comfortable places in which to work. If students view the libraries as uncomfortable, then they are unlikely to want to spend much time there.”
outline:
1.去图书馆少不代表读书少
2.7年级不代表全体学生
3.图书馆职能也很更重要
argument:
In this editorial, the arguer claims that because of the decrease in visit of students their town should improve the atmosphere of the libraries to make students feel more comfortable, and therefore want to spend much time there. However, this conclusion relies on a serious of groundless assumptions and therefore inconvincible as it stands.
To begin with, relying on the fact that many of the average seventh-grade student visit times were required cannot reach the conclusion that they are reading less as the arguer asserts. Firstly, the editorial did not illustrate how many books the students can take once. If the amount of borrowing was large enough, maybe the required four times was adequate for them. Secondly, with the rapid development of internet, we can search the E-books on the web conveniently without going to the libraries. It is widely acceptable that the information on the web was updated much more fast-pace than the print edition. Therefore, the seventh-grade students might prefer to this advanced tools. If so, it is unfair to elicit the students are reading less.
Moreover, the conclusion in the editorial is based on a biased data for the sample of seventh-grade students cannot be representative for all the students. Compared with other grade, maybe the study pressure on the students in such high grade is much lighter, so they did not need to spend time there as others. Similarly, it is entirely possible that the school provides a series of practices such as hiking and field works. And those activities occupy their most time so they are not free to go to libraries as before. Without more detailed information, the arguer cannot convincingly draw conclusion depended on an incomplete survey.
Last but not least, the arguer fails to take into account other possible reasons why the students make to their school library has decreased greatly in recent years. Admittedly, the atmosphere in the library was significant. However, the main function of library is to provide lending and reading. If the amount of collect books of library is so limited or useless that cannot always fulfill the need of students, they did not go there all the same whatever the atmosphere was reformative. In other words, the assertion that the libraries can attract more students for reading only by improving the atmosphere there is open to doubt.
In sum, careful scrutiny of the argument reveals several unproven assumptions, which render it unconvincing. To strengthen it, the arguer should provide all-sided sample to support the assumption that the number of students visited the libraries has decreased in recent years. Similarly, the arguer should provide detailed information to convince us that the reading of students was less. And he/she also should take into consider other possible reasons for the confirmed decrease in order to serve students better.
