38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
不知道那个电视的负面效应那个观点是否切题,请拍砖,谢谢!
According to the speaker, by watching television, people can learn as much as they can by reading books, thus reading books is not as important as before. Although I agree that numerous interesting knowledge can be acquired from television, there is far more for television to displace the primary role which books play in learning.
Admittedly, television has more visual impact on people than books. Television programs provide chances for people to enjoy the beautiful images of sceneries, or the emotional stories through teleplay. News television coverage make people possible to know about the important political or economical events at the unprecedented speed. Not only adults, children also benefit from television. Cartoons are the most popular program for children and their parents. It can not be denied that television helps people to acquire information more conveniently.
However, the information provided by television is not always positive. Many programs are fulfilled with violent, criminal or erotic scenarios which may induce juveniles, who are more easily influenced by external factors than adults, to imitate the behavior in these programs. Many parents strongly oppose to play these programs which are harmful for children or juveniles. Some parents also claim that without effective management, those programs would eventually cause juvenile delinquency. Though books may also contain some harmful or vicious contents, they could be first classified when published and then provided to readers. That is more reliable approach to prevent juveniles and even adults from vicious information than television programs, in which spectators are always passive receptors. Thus, reading books is the efficient and safe way to learn positive knowledge, other than vicious information in some television programs.
In addition, the contents of television programs are usually limited. When watching television, people always have few options to choose what they want to acquire, though many channels are provided. It is out of question that people can not easily learn knowledge in professional or serious academic fields, such as philosophy, anthropology, archeology or natural science, from television which always provide rudimental or fundamental knowledge appropriate for children, maybe. Conversely, people could access professional fields through books or other written records conveniently, Books are the most important way to share ideas or provide information, thus we can not imagine that an expert proposes his/her novel ideas in television program, other than put them in publication. In other words, television is only an entertainment tool in most time. In fact, people watch television in order to relax themselves and enjoy interesting things. Though there are some programs orienting education or training, their contents are always obsolete and can not satisfy people’s requirement. Actually, little truly useful knowledge is learned from television. When people have the requirement to accept new knowledge or information, they always choose to retort to books.
In conclusion, the speaker exaggerates the importance of television in people’s learning. People are passive receptors towards television, and can not be effective prevented from vicious information. In addition, television is only entertainment tool or supplement to books at most. Thus, the important role of books in learning could not be displaced by television. |
