36. "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
提纲没写,结构太简单了,也没什么好写的.
There is a public controversy over the issue that the greatness of individuals can be decided by people live after them or their contemporaries. In my opinion, in some fields, where accomplishment can be seen immediately, the contemporaries will recognize the greatness while in other fields cannot.
Firstly, most of the well known political leaders' greatness is recognized by their contemporaries while they would continue to be admired by the following people, especially the leaders during the war time. That is because their achievements can be seen obviously, like they lead a country's liberation or solve a problem of an economic crisis, such as Chairman Mao Zedong in China and the president F. Roosevelt in USA. Everyone living with them in the same time saw their greatness and showed great admiration to them. The same thing happens in the modern times. All the political leaders want gain people's support, so they work arduously and carry out policies that may be effective to the society quickly. Thus, no matter they succeed or not, they will be commented by the contemporaries. It brings a side effect, that political leaders just consider the present benefits but not make long plans for the future. As to the manager of a company, whose ability affects the whole company. Suppose that he/she has the ability to manage the company well. When he/she just cares about what the contemporaries think of him/her, short time plans will be made and they may lose long time benefit.
Secondly, when we come to the scientific studies, things are not always the same. Some of the scientific researches can be put in to use just when the scientists announce their results while the other kinds will take a long time to gain benefits for the society. What's more, many of the conclusions of scientific research cannot be understood by the contemporaries, thus even they bring about a revolution to the society, in which case the greatness of the scientists can only be seen after their death, even, sometimes it is a long process. Many scientists missed the Nobel Prize just because their theories were accepted by people long time after their death.
In sum, who can decide the greatness of individuals depends on the fields that people work on. Both the contemporaries and people live after them have the authority to make judges. In fact, the greatness is not decided by people, but by what they contribute to the society. Even no one find his/her greatness during one's life time, if he/she really has made great contributions to the human beings, people live after him/her will give him/her great reputation when they realize what he/she have done. |
