Is it the artist rather than the critic that makes something of lasting value to the society, as the speaker asserts? I concede that the artist’s works play a crucial role in the development of the whole society. However, we cannot neglect the critic’s function on the basis that it is the critic who recognize and promote the value of the artistic works, in my view, people should pay balanced attention to the contributions of the artist and the critic.
Admittedly, we cannot deny the role of the artist in the creation of the lasting-value artistic works. Truly famous artistic works, whether or not fairly evaluated by contemporary masses, are the treasure of all human beings because of the hard-to-imagine efforts and excellent thoughts of the artist in them. There are mountains of examples to support my view, one just need to look the world famous American novelist Mark Twain, some of whose works have been picked as our teaching material. Fortunately having been recognized by his contemporaries, Mark twain’ whole life is devoting to the novel writing, from which we can create a picture of the real American society in his age and find out the weakness of human beings. Famous artistic works give the society lasting value for its citizens to search for the true face of the world so as to completely work for the progress of the society not only in the present age but in the future.
However, the lasting value of any artistic works may be out of people’s consideration without the participating of the critic, at least for two reasons. First(语法问题) has to do with the recognition of the artistic works. It is the comments of the critics that provide human masses with the chance to find the further meaning of influential works under their appearances. The reasons as follows: for one thing, the absence of the concerning knowledge of art impedes people from appreciating the true greatness of the works, for another, the difficulties of the later people to appreciate the works come from the fact that they have no idea about the background information of the work. For one supporting example, one household works of impressionist Van Gogh, the Sunflower, is famous for its operation of color and paining(painting) style which may not be understood by people without the correlative knowledge.
The other aspect has to do with the promoting by the critic to the works. For some young artist, no matter how excellent they are, people can hardly recognize their value of their work as masses place no consideration on them. Sometimes, the praised comments of the critic which lead humans to pay attention of the work, for better or worse, would promote the development of the artistic works.
In my view, people should pay balanced emphasis on the artist and the critic for their contribution to the society, otherwise some negative consequences will occur. For one thing, undue emphasizing on the critic and un-emphasizing on the artist, because different people have different opinion on the same artistic works, will not give the useful information to the masses, as a saying goes “too many advices is actually no advice”. For the other, undue emphasis on the artist will lead people pay more attention to the artist rather than their works, in other words the artist’s reputation will overweight(overweigh) their artistic works. How can the development of the whole quality of the artist works let alone their contribution to the society be promoted in such environment?
In sum, the efforts of the artist in the creation of a priceless works is paramount significant, however, we cannot neglect the crucial role of the critic in the recognition and promoting of the works. In conclusion, people should strike a balance towards their value.
