Does video camera play such an important role that could take the place of written records in the modern times? Although I agree that video camera could provide an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life, the statement fails to account for the unmissable disadvantages of video camera as well as the advantages that written records have.

Admittedly, video camera shows much more talent than written records in many aspects such as they record the fact more accurately, more vividly and it can show exactly what happened long time ago. That's very important not only for documentary, but also for entertainment, evidences of issues and so on. Take the recent World Cup of FIFA for example, thousands of millions of people focused on the big football festival, however only a small group of them had the lucky chance to watch the games in Germany. Thus most of the football fans watched the game on TV shows, some of them watched live broadcast, some others watched just copied videos. Imagine that if we didn't have broadcasting technology, how could the huge number of football fans get the first time information and see their favorite player's performances during the games. And the organizer would lose much of their income too. There are many other examples too, for the video cameras now play a really vital role in security protection work. The camera record exactly the time, the person and the way something is destroyed.

However, video camera has many disadvantages such as it needs high technology that not everyone could operate, and it costs much thus most people could not afford to record everything with cameras. As a result, only a small group of people could enjoy the benefit that video cameras bring to us. Another disadvantage is that the cameras just record what happened, thought exactly, yet there is no thinking of it, thus different people would have different conclusions from the video. Comparing to the disadvantages of video camera, written records are more convenient. They cost just a little to record with words and if the writer has an excellent skill, he/she could record the fact as accurate as the cameras. What's more, the words written down are processed by the writer, thus they could be more brief and the important points are more easily to be found. There's another profit that video camera cannot gain is that words records could reach everyplace of the world, especially the place where no video signals could ever reach. To the extent that personal interpretation adds dimension and richness to the record, written documentation is actually more important than video.

To sum up, video camera is a good way to record fact of contemporary life either for contemporary or the future people to watch. However they cannot take the place of written records. The best way of recording is to combine the two methods.
