160. "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
对于一位强有力的领导者来说,最关键的能力就是要对一些原则和目标坚定不移。任何领导如果很频繁的、很轻易的为大众意志而转移的话,他将会一事无成。

提纲:
1、原则和目标正确时应该坚定不移;
2、不正确时则应听从大众意见。

Issue160
In the statement, the speaker claims that as an effective leader, one should remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and not be quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion. I partly agree with this view. I think whether effective leaders should hold their opinion depends on whether their principles and objectives are correct.

On the one hand, if the principles and objectives which leaders remain consistently committed to is correct and will lead their followers to attain success, then it is very important for leaders to hold their belief and avoid being influenced by shifts in popular opinion. As a case in point, Winston Churchill, who is a household name as a successful political leader, became the prime minister of Great Britain in 1939 when German commenced to invade West Europe. In a very short time, Nazi conquered most countries in the West Europe, and British army reinforcing their allies was completely defeated and had to retreat back to Britain. Under such severe situation, most British fell into despair; some of them lost courage to resist the invaders and even advised that England should surrender to German like their allies in West Europe so as to prevent being assaulted. At the crucial time, holding the belief that British people would win this war at last, Churchill insisted on defending the country by force, and he used his powerful lecture to raise morale of citizens and soldiers. Encouraged by Churchill's great spiritual strength, British people finally defeated the Nazi invaders and made a great contribution to the ultimate victory in 1945. From this example, we can see that it is important for leaders to hold the correct principles and objectives. Consider if at that time Churchill were influenced by those who dared not to fight with enemy and gave up resistance, and then not only the destiny of England but also the result of the second war might be changed.

On the other hand, if what leaders hold is not right and will lead to a failure in the end, then insisting their wrong opinion is harmful. One should look no further than the King of Macedonia, Alexander, a famous militarist who led his army to conquer most of the world he knew and build a large empire. But after seizing the territory of Persia, many of his followers advised him to have a stop for the reason that his soldiers were too tired to take part in battles again. But Alexander did not adopt those good advices and insist on assaulting Hindu, finally, with the lost of so much prominent warriors, he paid out a high expense and failed to conquer the country. This vivid case provides leaders an important caveat that they must judge whether their principles and objectives are correct before they determine to hold them as their belief.

In sum, for effective leaders, if their particular principles and objectives are correct, then they should remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and not be quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion. But if what they hold are wrong, then they should take advice from others.

In the statement, the speaker claims that as(to be) an effective leader, one should remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and not be quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion. I partly agree with this view. I think(to my view) whether effective leaders should hold their opinion depends on whether their principles and objectives are correct.

On the one hand(on one hand), if the principles and objectives which leaders remain consistently committed to is correct and will lead their followers to attain success(to success), then it is very important for leaders to hold their belief and avoid being influenced by shifts in popular opinion. As a case in point, Winston Churchill, who is a household name as a successful political leader, became the prime minister of Great Britain in 1939 when German commenced to invade West Europe. In a very short time, Nazi conquered most countries in the West Europe, and British army(armay’s) reinforcing their allies was completely defeated and had to retreat back to Britain. Consider if at that time Churchill were influenced by those who dared not to fight with(against) enemy and gave up resistance, and then not only the destiny of England but also the result of the second war might be changed.

On the other hand, if what leaders hold is not right and will lead to a failure in the end, then insisting their wrong opinion is harmful. One should look no further than the King of Macedonia, Alexander, a famous militarist who led his army to conquer most of the world he knew and build a large empire. In sum, for effective leaders, if their particular principles and objectives are correct, then they should remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and not be quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion. But if what they hold are wrong
