TOPIC: ISSUE83 - "Government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state, even though these areas are often extremely remote and thus accessible to only a few people."
I strongly agree with the speaker's assertion that government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state, even though these areas are often extremely remote and thus accessible to only a few people. While nearly everyone would agree in principle that certain efforts to preserve the natural environment are in humankind's best interests, impelling reliance on government would be indispensable and prudent, especially considering the complicated relationship between human and nature.
Since the outset of our world, human and nature are a inseparable part, without nature human can not live. Preserving publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state is not merely protecting them, simultaneously, we save the world we rely on and ourselves as well. The development of human's civilization and economy has caused tremendous damage to nature, however, there is no trend of halt. It is meaningful that a few areas of publicly owned wilderness be kept in their natural state because plants and animals can live freely without any fear in these areas. Without human interference, nature is capable of maintaining the balance of ecology. Hundreds of years ago, without the advanced technology, human live in harmony with nature, people never heard of the Green House Effect, the Ozone Layer Hole in the Antarctica and so on. It is our responsibility to restore what nature used to be. Preserving these areas has a significant meaning for researchers of biology and ecology. They are likely to continue to seek the answers of the origination and evolution of life.
The destruction of even a remote wildness area could result in unforeseeable effects on the larger environment .When it comes to such cases, The Ozone Layer Hole in Antarctica is quite suitable. The ozone hole over the South Pole is apparent in this false-color image taken by a satellite in October 1999. Low levels of ozone are shown in blue. Ozone is a gas that blocks harmful ultraviolet sunlight. Industrial chemicals released into the atmosphere have caused ozone to break down, opening holes in the ozone layer that tend to concentrate at the poles. Concentrations this great at ground level are dangerous to breathe and can damage the lungs. However, because the ozone layer of the atmosphere protects life on earth from the full force of the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation, it is critically important. It may destroy nature and what is worse, cause the extinction of human beings. Hence, many countries now give emphasis on the protection of environment.
While emphasizing the importance of a government's public propaganda, I insist that relevant laws against environmental destruction should be enacted. Without specific laws, government’s protection would be a kind of glancing and no effectiveness. Through strict legislation, government’s chastisement to those who damage the natural state of the wildness areas can give warns to the people. Even a few people could cause serous damage to a remote wildness area. In fact, environmental problems become grave these days, without the support of the local governments, the success of the protection battle would be very uncertain and even frustrated.
In the final analysis, only the authority and scope of power that a government possesses can ensure the attainment of agreed-upon environmental goals, so preserving publicly owned wilderness areas in there natural even though they are often extremely remote state are the responsibility of our government beyond all doubt.
