TOPIC: ISSUE4 - "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study." WORDS: 646 TIME: 01:15:00 DATE: 2007-7-31 14:02:49 The speaker contends that until using other knowledge and experience from different field of study, would there not have significant advancement in any field of study. In my observation and experience as a college student, I strongly agree with the speaker's contention in most of the time. Although every discipline has its own characteristic which help it stand by itself as a subject, it is absorbing different kinds of knowledge that would make a discipline more integrated and advance forwards. To begin with, with the technology which is supplied by other study field, some once independent study field can improve significantly. One need look no further than the invention of computer, not only in information technology but also in other subjects, which plays a pivotal role. For example, when brought into architecture, the computer technology can help drawing and designing become more quick, convenient and precise. At the same time, patients could be examined quickly with less physical pain because of the adoption of high technology such as X - ray, CT. Obviously, what makes a field of study advance towards better and more integrated direction is to take the knowledge of other subject and then integrate with original knowledge. Further, when many subjects came together in a organic way a new discipline might be born. Now, biochemistry has came into being because of the integration between biology and chemistry, which benefited our life in many aspects greatly such as ailment precautions and descendible research. To this extent, it is the interrelation between different disciplines that make a field study to promote the others advancement. Secondly, it is the ideas and knowledge coming from other field of study that help a discipline achieve significant advancement. Take the advertising for instance, not only the knowledge about the situation of consumers' behavior and market's fluctuation, the students must also study the psychology, sociology, statistics and management science in order to know the causes of consumer's behavior and market's fluctuation and quickly make the solution. Those who only study in advertising field will receive limited knowledge and could not understand the inherent essence in advertising action. When it comes to the political field, it is the same that different field study would help people to make policies quickly and precisely. For example, Jefferson, as one of the most well-known politicians in American history, had a wide interests included not only the political science, but also many other fields -- such as history, literature, philosophy and mathematics which helped him established a all-round knowledge system in political career. Thanks to the knowledge integration, he could be aware of life status quo, welfare condition, and economic situation in American society of the time and finally drafted out " the Declaration of Independence" which benefited many Americans. So, without integration between all kinds of field, no subject would make significant achievement the same as the effects after integrated. Admittedly, every field of study has its own different characteristics that separate it from other subjects. The things which consumers concern and the fluctuation which competition result in both are the research field of advertising, while physics explores the order of nature. At the same time, the research methods between the two are also different in which advertising-men may adopt the integration of emotional examine and rational study, while physicists may adopt experimentation. However, even the most seemingly absolutely irrelevant fields inevitably have necessary links, which indicates that diversity of fields are more or less dependent on each other in tune with the times that our world became more integrated than before. In sum, it's true that the knowledge and experience which the outsiders bring into the field will help it improve more rapidly and advance forwards. To make our fields of study more professional and more efficient, we should bring useful knowledge of other fields together and make them integrated in an organic way. |
