47. "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
社会对于智力还是重视不够，比如推理和认知的能力。


(1)智力是一个社会发展的宝贵财富, 但并不是决定因素。；
(2)EQ反映人的想象力、情感、创造力，是社会前进不可缺少的动力；
（3）社会给予了IQ足够的重视，但忽视EQ的培养，造成很多问题；

The society has placed much more expectation on the intellect than it used to do. Although I agree that the intellect has manifested its significance in the technological era, it is far more to measure an individual’s comprehensive capacities than an objective method.  As far as I am concerned, I believe our society does place enough emphasis on the intellect , while neglects others factors, such as EQ, which also plays an important role in one's success.

Admittedly, for a long time people has take it for granted that IQ serves as a criteria to measure one's abilities. One the one hand, if an individual scores well in IQ tests, he or she is admitted to college or likely to get a appealing occupation, since  there is an assumption  that a high  connection existed between the results of IQ tests and one's capabilities, especially on reasoning and cognitive skills. On the other hand, we often predict others’ future success according to his or her IQ. For example, in many countries some high IQ children are allowed special education to cultivate their potential abilities. Consequently, IQ, as its convenience and accuracy, brings comparative objective standard to weight one’s abilities in the long history.  

EQ, reprehensive of emotion quotient, charges one' imagination, emotion, creative also. EQ can help people achieve success in many fields. As we all know, a famous scientist once said: achievement consist of one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. We can also find evidence from another scientist, Paul Ehrlich, a great chemist, who discovered a drug to treat those afflicted with syphilis. He named the drug "formula 606", because there were 605 failures before the test came to the satisfied result.  The lesson we can draw from this story is clear and simple: persistence and diligence also play significant role in one’s success.

Our society, from the industrial revolution till now, has drawn more and more attention to people's IQ while neglecting EQ’s performance in social ordinary life. The development of new technology and the globalization of the world economy have created high demand for intellectual elites. As a result, schools combine rival ideals in a curriculum of mathematics, engineering, architecture, computer programming and so on.. This education system is emphasized on developing the individual's intelligence. Addition to school education, for most parents, who usually be regarded as the first teachers for children, they do their outmost effort to cultivate children’s intellectence. Unfortunately, the merits rooted in characters such as honesty, persistence, tolerance, self-esteem and the skill to resolve social problems have been excluded. The output of this educational philosophy is dozens of high IQ students who has been admitted to enough academic degree while fails to live up with the expectation of the society.

All in all, it is important for the society to continue put attention on intellect development of individual, but to supplement it with more EQ improvement, for it also available to one’s achievement in the whole lifetime.

明天交一个哲学论文,后天作一个小报告,星期四参加话剧,下个星期意大利语的final考试,还有另外一篇关于同性恋学的论文, 看来我之前真的太高估自己的能力及心态了..:(
这几天压力很大..issue 38写了一半实在写不出来.后面的作业还没有来得及写.
先上来和大家说一声,不好意思了,这几天确实没有把组里的事放在心上.:(

另外星期三晚上我会回来补作业+布置这周新的作业.
PS:我们小组现在人太少了,一两个人有事就感觉整个组的状态都不好了.
也许我们应该考虑新加几个成员?
(目前除了我们三个,就只有PK,他也好久不见人了..:()

anyway,等我星期三晚上回来再说吧,现在去写论文了..(其实我更想写AWA的!!!>.<~~!)
大家不要自暴自弃,如果不跟着小组写,也要自己坚持..

看了两天的例文了，写的还是巨恶心，唉，gre作文哪，让我如何喜欢你？

提纲：1，intellect 可以使人们保持理智的行为，以七宗罪为例
      2  intellect同样对社会进步有益
      3，但不能忽视emotion and imagination 的作用。

The speaker thinks that society should place enough emphasis on the intellect while emotions and imagination seems not so important to society. I fundamentally agree with that intellect are beneficial to the society, however, I do not believe that emotion and imagination are not important.

To be first, the harm of society is more relied on people's intellect, that is reasoning skills and activities. The reasoning skills can restrict people from doing extreme activities, and even anti-social activities. In the movie "Seven Sins", one police knew his beloved wife was murdered, and the angry police found the murder and killed him directly, although he was aware that the murder's purpose was to lead him to violate laws. As a police, he could not control his instinct and depended on emotion to address problems. Therefore, absence of intellect would make society plunge into a precarious state. This is the necessity that society should put more stress on the intellect to reduce instinct working on humans.

Moreover, the progress of society could not go without enough intellect as well. Take the inventions in science and technology as example, intellect contributes to every important breakthroughs or inventions. It is true that the original ideas are come from imagination which is opposite to intellect, but we should not forget that the final implementing of those ideas are depended on well-rounded intellect. Take Windows operating system as example. Bill Gates is undoubtedly an talent who can get such a revolutionary idea, but I think he should contribute most of his achievement to his excellent computer programming skill.   


However, we put enough emphasis on intellect does not mean that emotion and imagination are not important. Emotion and imagination, especially embodied in art and music, can culture people. Through emphasizing emotion students can learn not only the fixed knowledge from textbooks but also to find that love, care and respect are necessary in our lives. The role that imagination plays in society is that it can lead people to think new ideas, which bring hopes of improving our society.

In sum, the society should place enough emphasis on intellect, but at the same time, we should not neglect the importance of emotion and imagination.
