Before urge the termination of students' evaluation of the professors with considerable enthusiasm, though, there are several dubious aspects to reexamine. Granting the superficial cogent representation, the argument is unfortunately flawed logically, thus inefficient as it stands.
Firstly, the overall rise of students' grade necessitates no direct connection with the evaluation system. After referring to the commencement of the system and the ensuing increase of grade, the author alleges without much convincible proof the cause and effect relationship between them which is otherwise unmentioned and possibly incorrect. The rise of grade could be treated as the signal of the improvement of students' abilities, for it is wholly possible that after the implication of this system professors are largely more concerned with instruction and teaching which might formerly be partially ignored while compared with other academic activities such as research and publication of papers. In this case, the ultimate aim of valuation is achieved and the explanation indicated in the text should be dismissed as humiliation of teachers and students' personalities. Or the qualities of students are actually upgraded whose occurrence randomly coincident with the establishment of the system, and the relatively high scores are the accurate reflection of their advanced abilities while bear no relation with grade inflation.
Secondly, the author presumed the employers' believe in the inflation of students' grade without plausible justification. Perhaps A is famous with remarkable reputation for qualified education, or A is concentrated in job training which plays a significant part during job searching while O much more concerned with rigorous academic study thus is not so competitive in the job market. However, without much survey and interview the alleged apparent believe could only be regarded as the subjective judgment with no scientific support.
Thirdly, beside grade there are many other factors which also seriously influenced whether certain student can find a satisfactory job. If the promising position is somewhat closely related to his major--in the common view, this condition takes no great part--the grade is comparatively more important. Considering the educational quality of various colleges, the importance of grade is significantly diminished and can not be treated as a reliable criterion for seeking qualified employees. Also, the individual abilities of particular student are the decision of whether he can get the job. Even his grade is not so satisfactory as comparing with the others, his attributable personalities, as perseverance, optimism, tolerance, rally point and encouragement are all vital for his success. What society needs is not a standing bookcase, but a person who can effectively contribute and continuous progress, thus grade might not the only standard for comparing.
In sum, whether terminating the evaluating system should be weighed from various aspects, merely relying on the comparison with A and unreasonable conjecture is somewhat insufficient. However, job-searching is a much more complex issue than comparing grades and many other means should be induced and examined. |
