ISSUE109 - "The purpose of many advertisements is to make consumers want to buy a product so that they will 'be like' the person in the ad. This practice is effective because it not only sells products but also helps people feel better about themselves."
Does it really like the speaker says, advertisements are useful for selling products and helping consumers feel better? Under some circumstances, this assertion may be right. However, this assertion cannot be used in all conditions.
To begin with, many ads do have the function to attract consumers' attention. In these ads, products are described as perfect as possible. While watching these ads, they are sometimes too tempting that we cannot help buying for these beautiful screens and attractive characteristics in ads. Just as the speaker says, one of the main purposes for ads is to make people have the feeling that they will "be like" the person in the ad. Take ads in the field of sports for example. In order to increase the sales of certain brand of sports shoes, actors in the ad are portrayed more powerful than our normal athletes. When they are equipped with the shoes, they can jump longer and higher, to some extent, almost fly. Every potential consumer who imagines doing well will be attracted deeply.
However, while helping consumers feel better than ever before, do these ads help them make their dreams reality? I don't think so. Many, if not most, these ads exaggerate products’ effect. In some conditions, the merit of products is excessively praised while many disadvantages are overlooked. In other words, it can't help consumers feel better. On the contrary, when consumers have purchased their loving products but ultimately realize that these products are not what they imagine. They can’t jump as high as showed in ads at all. It is one kind of hurt that will lead to the serious depression rather than helping consumer build up their confidence. Thus, ads are no use for consumer to realize their dream in a right and effective way.
On balance, while certain products are really useful for what they describe in ads, some others cannot perform very well. In my observation, consumers should look at these ads in an objective way. On one hand, we should put emphasis on what ads introduction, find out whether the characteristics described in the ads are what you need; on the other hand, we should not expect a lot from these ads, all ads to some extent will exaggerate products' advantages while ignoring their disadvantages. In addition, the most pragmatic means to know these products well is to experience them by ourselves rather than watching ads. Ads can merely help us in a relatively small scale, we must utilize other means to find out whether certain products are worthy enough to buy.
In the aggregate, I concede that ads play a significant role on the sales of products. However, we can't imagine being what portrayed in the ad exactly. In the final analysis, ads should do something useful to work this problem out. That is to say, while exalting the advantage of the products, ads must have their consumers know precisely what they will gain from the products. |
