------题目------
Anyone can make things bigger and more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in the opposite direction—in other words, to make things as simple as possible.
------正文------
Can anyone make things bigger and more complex? Does only making things as simple as possible require real efforts and courage? The speaker believes so, but I cannot agree with these opinions. While making things simple requires necessary efforts and courage, making things bigger and more complex is not an activity which is so easy that can be conducted by anyone.
Admittedly, making things as simple as possible help people save time, energy as well as money, which is highly respected by ordinary residents and requires corresponding efforts and courage. Scientists work with numerous phenomena and statistics in order to conclude natural rules which can be easily used by following generations, while students try their best to answer questions in the simplest way so as to work quickly and correctly in exams. Undoubtedly, they cannot succeed without everyday efforts to obtain relative knowledge as well as to develop their intelligence, and the courage to overcome difficulties as well as to announce their imagination.
Nevertheless, making things bigger and more complex also requires efforts and courage, whether similar to or different from those required by simplification.
First of all, making things bigger and more complex requires efforts and knowledge to obtain relevant professional knowledge, similar to those required by simplification. The activity of making things bigger and more complex cannot be conducted by anyone, because the one who wants to take part in an activity has to understand the fundamental theories and applications at first. For example, the one who intends to add supplementary functions to a car has to gain the knowledge of mechanics and engineering, otherwise no one can ensure the safety of the car. Similarly, adding new codes to a law system requires the knowledge to adjust conflicting or confusing sentences and to predict future effects. As such knowledge cannot be obtained without freely, making things bigger and more complex also requires corresponding efforts to consume knowledge and courage to overcome problems.
Besides, making things bigger and more complex means particular efforts and courage to control the entire process and to tolerate unknown results. While making things as simple as possible enables people to receive results quickly and efficiently, making things bigger and more complex will induce circumstances difficult to be overseen or predicted. Take computer models for example. Simple models can give out results within minutes, showing basic characteristics of evolvement, whereas complex models, which provide people with more detailed and accurate processes, require days and weeks to complete a single run. Unlike simple models, which can be rewritten easily and quickly, complex ones require great efforts to maintain carefulness and courage to accept the possibility of failure after a long period of assiduity. As a result, making things bigger and more complex requires efforts and courage, in a form different form those of simplification.
In conclusion, not anyone can make things bigger and more complex, and such an activity also requires efforts and courage, either similar to or different from those required by making things simple. While they both require efforts and courage to obtain knowledge and to overcome difficulties, making things bigger and more complex requires special efforts to control the whole process and particular courage to accept the possibility of costly failure. |
