TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
WORDS: 620 TIME: 0:41:49 DATE: 2007-3-8
When it comes to critics of the leaders, I tend to hold the point of view that effective leaders should not only possess the ability for leading others and judging situations advisable, at the same time they should also maintain the highest ethical and moral standards among the society.
Fundamentally, a leader who is employable for his position ought to have the very ability to accurately judge the situations which endues him with advisable actions as well as the ability of attracting civilians under his control. The kindest and most faithful leaders to the society, who are on the other hand not with sufficient abilities to make proper decisions, are never effective as they may waste the wealth and time of the society. Take the former chairman Zedong Mao in China, who is faithful and do everything for his people throughout his life. However, in his later age, he made an improper evaluation to the contemporary situation, which drived him make a hasty decision to launch the cultural revolution in China. The revolution brought about the hugest calamity to the China's society, which left China's development far behind other countries. Even though his purpose is of high ethical standards, he technically made the crucial mistake which smirched the fame he ever had.
While it is necessary for effective leaders to have the abilities referred to above, he should possess the highest ethical and moral standards which can ensure his standpoint in the correct direction. The leader of the government Mayor Mu, for instance, has undoubtedly been a skillful mayor since he had made several vital decisions which provided huge changes in our city so that level of our lives were enormously enhanced during his governance. However, he was finally drived out of the political stage because of his corruption. He defalcated for a large amount of wealth from the wealth which should have been possessed by the whole population of civilians. Even though he had brought about large changes for civilians' lives, he also had brought in huge damage for the city.
In addition, not only the right directions while making judgments requires the high ethical and moral standards of the leaders, people will refuse to accept a wicked leader who tends to damage their interests. For example, the former president Clinton of America, who was drived away by the Americans, is eulogized for his high ability aside from his ultimate scandal's occurrence. Nevertheless, public opinions could not bear his reign once his sex scandal was exposed, even though his scandal had nothing to do with damage of people's profits. As a leader, he is supposed to be perfect in his people, who can not put up with any defect's appearance.
In other words, a truly effective leader should be both full of wisdom and eligible in the ethical and moral standards. I can perfectly illustrate this image by citing the example of Martin Luther King, who had guided the Negroes to bid defiance to the discriminatorily treating with them. He devoted all his life to the striving for the peace and equality for all people who are partially treated. Not only did he possess the ability of calling for the people to fight with him, he also had the highest ethical and moral standards to set up a good example for all people, which endued people the intention to obey him. Only with such abilities as well as high ethics can a leader achieve similar accomplishment as him.
To sum up, while what I have discussed above have developed a integrate image of effective leaders, what we should do more is just to supervise the leaders to ensure them to make every effort to advance the development of our society.
