TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

The speaker claimed that only by meeting the individual needs and interests will education be
truly effective. Although I agree that interest plays a vital role in the learning process. I
don't believe that, in reality, education can be geared to the needs and interests of every
student and that those courses lacking the interests of students can not contribute to the
effectiveness of education.

The famous inventor Edison once said (and I paraphrase):" Interest is the best teahcher." It

is true that one will never feel tired or lack of vigor when doing what he/she enjoys doing.
As a reasult, those who have found a merging point between their career and interest are more likely to gain success in this increasingly competitive world, for they always think they are
enjoying their life rather than trying to survive in the society by finishing the endlessly
assigned tasks. Some representative examples as follow: without a deep love of dancing, how
could Yang Liping, a towering dancer in China, performed like a real beautiful peacock on the
stage; without a perpetual enthusiasm for basketball, how could Air Michael Jordan,
ceaselessly, creat miracles in the field of basketball; and without a persistent passion for
scientific research, tungsten could never be discovered, after hundreds of experiments by
Thomas Edison, as the most appropriate material of filament.

However, taking the currently insufficient human and material resources and gloomy financial
condition of education into consideration, one can conclude immediately that, in fact, it is
hard or even impossible to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. One of the
various reasons is that there are always more students than teachers in most schools. If
education must focus on individual needs in order to be truely effective, millions of
teachers, without a doubt, will be needed around the world. In addition, are there enough
sophisticated devices for the innumerable students who are interested in high-tech subjects,
such as astronomy, biochemistry and computer engineering? Certainly not, so a more realistic
and effective way of education is to teach students the basic skills of learning and let them
know how to trace their own interests by using Internet and books. Apart from what I stated
above, let's think about the children who live in poor areas and even don't have an
opportunity to go to school. To them, no matter what kind of education in their hometown, if
any, will be truely effective.

Moreover, although some subjects, such as philosophy, physics and fundamental mathematics, may not appeal to some students, they should also be especially emphasized by a truely effective education, for they are essential to cultivate a well-rounded person. Philosophy is important
because it makes students be able to think critically and logically; physics is essential
because it teaches students some basic skills of daily life, mending a bicycle or connecting
two electrical wires for example; and fundamental mathematics also plays a vital role because
it will finally serve as the indispensible knowledge of almost all subjects in one's further
study.

In conclusion, a truely effective and realistic education should based on a balance among
various factors, such as human and material resources, ecnomic condition and the degree of
importance of every subject, rather than focus on the individual needs and interests only.
