117The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

In this argument,the arguer recommends that Valu-Mart(VM) srores should increase stocks of home office machines and office supplies which will grant the office-supply department to be the most profitable components of VM stores.In order to support the recommendation,the arguer points out that according to the recent survey,most of people preferred to take work home than they were in the past.However,this recommendation rests on a series of unsubstantiated assumtption and therefore unpersuasive as it stands.
In the first place,the result of this survey of this result is not statistical reliable.The arguer provides no information that all the respondents in the survey are all representative to all the people .It is quite possible that people who prefer to work-at-home are more inclined to involve into this survey,and people who prefer finishing work at workplace seldom express their ideas in this survey.Without ruling out this possibility and sufficient information about the survey,the result of this survey is doubtful.
In the second place,even assuming the result of this survey is reliable,the arguer provide no evidence that the demand of home office machines and office supplies is increasing.Perhaps at present the home office and office supplies could satisfy the need of these who prefer work-at-home,there is no need for the VM stores to increase stocks of home office machines and office supplies.Without sufficient evidence,the recommendation is not persuasive.
In the third place,even assuming there is an increasing demand of home office machines and office supplies,the arguer unfairly assumes that office-supply department would be the most profitable department of VW stores.Common sense informs us that the demand of commodity is definitely not the only factors influence the profit,the cost and quality of commodity and other factors all could influence the profit.If the cost of all these office home machines and office supplies are all very high,or if the quality of all these machines and supplies are poor,obviously the office-supply could not be the profitable department in VW stores.
In sum,the recommendation is not persuasive and convincing.To strengthen the recommendation,the arguer needs to prove that the result of this survey is reriable.To evaluate the recommendation,I need more information about that whether there is an increasing demand about the home office machines and office supplies.What is more,the arguer needs to provide enough evidence that the office-supply department would be the most profitable department. |
