Issue: 185 “Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformers ever could.”
Words: 623 Time: 100 minutes
It is very frequent to hear some scandals from the media about corruption, crime, moral deterioration, etc, which can attract large amount of concentrations of people and become the focus of chatting. By being demonstrated to the public and monitored strictly, scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas can bring positive effect to the society.
First, scandals can be effective tools to force persons who make mistakes to realize their wrong doing and correct them. With the advanced development of technology, the mass media became more and more powerful, which can reflect almost all corners of the society, and report the news immediately. It is not strange that what you have done yesterday may be on a TV program tomorrow watched by millions of audience. Someone who has accepted bribery has to admitted to the public for his ugly behavior and receives punishment because of the effect that brought by the scandal, which gives him or her notorious reputation. For instance, Clinton, the former president of America, became the focus of the world in a period for his sexual scandal with Lewinsky-his secretary. Only by demonstrated to the public of this scandal has he acknowledged to the public for what he has done, although his wife has blamed him seriously and gave him some warnings. So we can see how effective the scandal is in revealing the wrong doings and bringing correction for them.
Second, it is no doubt that scandals can play an important role in protecting and monitoring all kinds of bad phenomenon in society like corruption, crime. Naturally, everyone is very pleased to win a good reputation, which is even the only aim of life. By considering the embarrass condition and wretched result of one who is punished for his or her scandal, the public is educated to obey the laws from conscious not just in oral. This ideal effect can not be obtained by the speakers of reformers who have making great efforts to call on the public to follow the laws even using the best results to persuade them, which gains only endless tiresome because they have heard them frequently and been accustomed to them. However, monitoring by the scandals and considering the effects brought by them, the public are spontaneous to obey the laws to regularize their behaviors, and then a harmonious society is formed.
Admittedly, there are some people who use the mass media to make them be famous to the public by making scandals. It is true that we admit the individualism but this does not mean that we can do anything just in our own opinion neglecting others' interest. Someone takes advantage of the curiosity of the public, who is boring with the regular news, and makes some scandals which can not be understood regularly, with the only help that his or her name can be known to the public. A case on this point is that there is a video widely spreading on the internet which records a procession of a young girl killing a cat by stomping the head of the cat with an ugly smile on her face while miserable crying from the cat. It truly attracts some people' curiosity but brings the loss of conscience and human nature of someone. Therefore, this kind of scandal can only bring some misleading to the society, which must be abandoned.
In conclusion, scandals truly play an important role in monitoring the behaviors of people, correcting wrong doing and educating the people to obey laws, which are sometimes more effective than the efforts of speaker and reformer. But we must treat scandals with a correct attitude, not always focus on them and give firmly no attention to whom that want to gain fame by making scandals.
Issue: 142 "The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority."
提纲:
Authority dose not equal to the reality which means there are some deviations between them. It is a indispensable step of the approach to success to question the authority which is source if innovation and originality. So I agree with the statement that "The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority".
First, authority does not always stand the reality, especially when it is manipulated by some interest group. Generally speaking, only the brilliant man who masters the highest level of the field can be an authority in this field. Taking the Ptolemaic system of astronomy as a case of this point.
Second, questioning the authority is the source of innovation and originality. The flaw of a theory can be questioned which gave some implications for the last success. Give the example of Copernicus and Galileo.
Third, questioning by any different opinion the authority can become more perfect. The authority must have the ability to treat any questions, or it can not stand up.
If we absolutely adore the authority, it is harmful to the development of the society.
In conclusion, by questioning the authority, we can analyze it thoroughly, rectify the defect of it and development it best. So we must have the courage to question the authority and by dong this the society will progress from it.
Issue: 160 "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
提纲:
First, Sometimes it is meaningful for the leader to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives, which guarantees them to implement the policies in his opinion and avoid the influence which can hamper the implementation.
However, an effective leader must obtain the ability to hear the different opinions with patience and the courage to correct the mistake of him after accepting the useful advice from others. |
