Issue 38: “In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books”

In this age of television, we can almost get all kinds of information and enjoy enormous interesting programs by watching TV, even we can say it is indispensable in our daily life. However, some negative effects brought by TV can not be neglected and the role of Reading books playing in our learning is not lessened as the popularity of TV.

First, reading books are still playing a very important role in our learning. It is often said that books are the mental food of us which implies the importance of books to us. It is books that help us to full our blank brain with knowledge from unknown to educated. Without reading books, we can not know the essential moving laws thoroughly and why apple is always falling down, the necessary conditions that make life exist and how life originates, the theory of exploding of the bomb and how to produce and control it, etc. Without the direction of books, our life will be very difficult like boggling in a desert. A book is a concluding in one field which supplies some guidance for us to learn.

Second, reading books is very convenient for us to learn because of its small size and abundant resource. Thanks to the industrious collection, the books now available are very plentiful. We can almost get any kind of books that we want from a library. If we want to use it more, we can borrow it out and carry with us. Anytime and anywhere we want, we can read it. There are no any limits when learn by reading books, not like reading in computer which needs enough electricity and the price of it is high.

Admittedly, as the development of technology, television brings us some benefit and helps us to learn. By watching the fresh news, we can know many important events in the world immediately. There are also some good programs useful for us to learn, like Lecture Room, a CCTV program which explains the history of China to the audience using an easily understood way. The reason why this program can be so popular is that it takes a modernized method to help audience to learn, not just by reading books, which has been accustomed and boring for people.

However, as the popularization of television in our daily life, it also brings us some negative effects. Some programs about sex, crime, violence, etc, can often be seen in the TV programs, which are bad for the growing of young people. As the ability of self control is not so strong, the youngsters are easy to imitate as the actor in the program, which cause them to form some bad habits, even induce them to crime. A case of this point is the program of Super Girl in Hunan TV. Many young girls adore the actress in that program and imitate them blindly, abandon the good habits of a student need, wear inappropriate decoration and clothes. So it is true that the programs of television are not always positive to us.

In conclusion, as the television became more and more popular in our life, it truly benefits us in learning but this does not mean that the role of reading books in our learning is lessened. Considering the negative effect brought by television, we must treat it with a proper attitude, not fully trust it. Just only by this, we can benefit from it mostly.     
  
Issue 109: “The purpose of many advertisements is to make consumers want to buy a product so that they will “be like” the person in the ad. This practice is effective because it not only sells products but also helps people feel better about themselves.”
Syllabus:
1.       It is true that consumers can not only enjoy the useless of some products, but also get a mental satisfaction that they are like the person in the advertisements.

2.       There also some advertisements that only the equality of the products that attract the consumers.

3.       Nowadays, some enterprises exaggerate the true effect of their products by false advertisements to cheat the consumers.


Issue 7: “The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documents than written records.”
Syllabus:
1.       The video camera truly plays an important role in recording contemporary life because of its accuracy and convince.
2.       There are also some limits for the video camera. Not all things can be recorded by video camera because there is no sure that when something happens there is a video there. The records of video camera are not easy to preserve. It is easily broken and lost.
3.       The form of written records is still very important because it can give more details and can be got even after the events by interviewing.
4.       However, there are some limits for the written records because sometime they are not so convinced.
In conclusion, we should realize both the advantages and disadvantage of the video camera and written records and combine them correctly to serve us better.
