It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public.

With the ever-increasing influence of the politics on the public in our modern society, the people began to emphasize the honesty behaviors of the political leaders.  Although the  secret information concerning the safety and stability of the whole country and growth of economy should be withhold from the public in some cases, I strongly agree that the political leaders should keep the information open in face of the public because this behavior will win the support of the people and expand the political influence on the people.

As an effective political leader, the forthrightness is very important quality they should maintain because this quality will greatly win the trust of public on the government and expand the government political influence. We can see this point particularly in the dangerous situations for the people and the whole country. For example, when the severe diseases like the SARS threaten the life of the public, the political leader shouldn’t withhold the fact from the public. Considering that the disease is greatly epidemic, the government might not control over the whole situation with its own power. The sooner the people know it, the safer the people might be. Once public recognize the severity of this disease, they will take every effective measurement to prevent from the disease. Another example is the war in London during the First World War. When the country is on the verge of ruin, Churchill, the Prime minister of England, He told the public everything about the dangerous condition and he is very confident that we will win the war finally. His forthrightness and confidence inspire the strong resolution of individuals to fight against the invaders with all their power to the end.

On the contrary, keeping the information from the public might be result in the forfeit of the political leaders and the declined prestige of government. An good example is the former President Nixon. His contempt for the legal system has a bad influence on the government and the pubic. Although the government passed a series of legislations to avoid the similar events happening and enhance the prestige of the government after that event, the people were confused and had lose the trust on the government. More and more began not to respect the government and disobey the laws carried out by the lawman. Recently Arnold, the chief executive of California State, is blamed seriously for revelation of his sexual misconduct and part-time job as editor of a magazine. The prestige of the government is undermined again.  

Acknowledging the indispensable role of honesty the in the leadership, the information concerned about the safety and stability of the whole country and growth of economy should be open to the public. Once these secret information leaked out for the people or other country, the whole country might undergo imponderable loss. For example, the secret data about the military power and strategies might lead to a war.  

In conclusion, in most case the political leaders should open the information to the public particularly concerned with the people's life. However, the secret information for the safety and stability of the whole country and growth of economy should be withheld from the public.
