The speaker asserts that facts are stubborn things, which cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions. I agree that facts are objectives, which is somewhat stubborn. However due to the subjective nature through which human beings perceive the world, they may not be able to understand the real facts.

It may be tempting to agree with the speaker that fact are stubborn and objective. Fact is the objectives in their very own meaning, unaffected by observation or understanding from human beings. Every thing in this world is behaving in its own way, and show the appearance of its own, which would not be altered. Earth is rotating around the sun, the center of the universe, while moon is circling about Earth, which was finally proved by Copernicus. Despite the different opinions of people in the medieval, stating that sun is rotating around Earth, or Earth is the center of the universe, they could not change the fact, which is determined by God casting the dice, not by people voting a poll. No one could believe it when Einstein published the relative theory, arguing that the speed of light was constant, while the weight of everything could change according to its relative speed. However years later he was proven to be true. This is the case for everything else in science and nature. Fact could never be altered.

Yet the foci would be too narrow if we over-emphasis on the objective nature of facts, thus overlooking the subjective nature of the processes through which human would understand facts. No one would deny that the ability of human's perception is very limited, therefore sometimes leading us to the wrong aspect of nature. God always tries to hide the truth to fool human. Darwin threw the whole world into chaos when he published his theories of evolution and nature selection.  Who could accept the very fact that human evolved from other species, and even bugs were our relatives? Since the whole process of understanding facts include observation as well as critical thinking, it is sometimes hard for human to understand facts, due to its intricate nature, because facts are always changing their external appearance, which would lead human to misunderstandings, although its internal nature remains. Moreover, even if some of the truth remains, both in terms of internality and appearance, it may still beyond human intelligence to understand it. Thus it is difficult to understand the fact, although truth remains unaltered.

The second argument which I find most compelling is from the explanations of human psychology that man is always trying to observe nature with a colored glasses. He would often see things, which he is psychologically favored, and unconsciously neglects things he dislikes. That is to say, people observe facts in a selective means. Thus it is entirely possible that the same thing turns out to be different or even contradictory in two groups of people's understandings. In this way, facts are distorted. World is different in different person's eyes. There is a Chinese saying that " Girl friend is always riveting in her lover's eyes."  Facts are misunderstood by subjectively selecting some truth while discarding other aspect of the truth, which should have been equally important.

In the final analysis, I agree with the speaker that facts are stubborn things, which cannot be altered, due to their objective nature. However, since different people view the same facts in their own selective ways, facts are often distorted. We need to be as objective as possible when observing facts, especially when doing scientific researches.
