It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Ever since the inception of the art in the human history, there has been the debate regarding the effect of critics. This assertion puts a lot of weight on the contributions made by the artists and totally denies the action played by the critics in the history of art. Although no one could deny that fact that it is the artists who create the artwork which has the lasting value, and, sometimes, the creativity of the artists are oppressed by the critics, it is unfair to overlook the impetus which the critics bring to the society.

First of all, it is the artworks created by the artists, no matter what forms they are such as music, painting, literature, etc, possess the art value. If there is no artwork, there is no carrier of lasting value, and no critics will be able to address their criticism, thus no possible value to the society could exist. In the history of art, artists could still create artwork without critics while there is no critic if there is no artist. This circumstance has especially apparent in the medieval when numerous artistic works have been engaged without any consideration of the contemporary people and few of them draws comments from the critics.

Secondly, sometimes, critics play a role of counteractive in the process of artists' creation and the propagation of the artwork. It is possible that the spirit of an artwork is beyond the scope of critics, so it draws some negative comments from the critics which will obstruct the further creation of the artist and the propagation of this artwork, especially when the critic are famous. Because approbated by a good reputed expert always means success, so some creative artists would try to cater for those authorities, which will do the harm for the development of the art.

On the other hand, it is too hasty to draw the conclusion that critics always play a negative role in the development of art.

The comments of the critics provide people with the opportunity to focus the attention on the further meaning of artworks. It is well known that the critics are well-trained and more experienced in finding the deep meaning of a particularly artist’s work, while the common people are easily trapped by the ostensible facts of it, such as the light and image of a painting, the sound of a music, the plot of a fiction. It is the critics’ duty to point the further meaning of the artworks. Let us take a famous ancient Chinese fiction-- A Dream of Red Mansions--for illustration. The author Cao xueqing reveal the trend of  feudalism society in China by describing several aristocrats; however, the readers are easily immersed in the details of this fiction, and there came an academy association of A Dream of Red Mansion whose fellows are devoted to exploit the further meaning of this fiction. Obviously, the critic plays an important role in art under some situation.

Sometimes, the critics serve as the impetus of the development of the art.  The artists, especially the rookies, need feedback when they publish their works. The critics always provide the incisive, profound and quick comments for them, which will be very helpful for their artwork and their further progress. So critics sometimes are constructive to promote the progress of the artists.

To sum up, while some people may still remain unconvincing about the reason I have analyzed above, the argument should at least make them aware of the complexities of the issue under discussion. There is little doubt that more and more people will come to realize that both artists and critics play important roles in the history of arts.

Ever since the inception of the art in the human history, there has been the debate regarding the effect of critics. This assertion puts a lot of weight on the contributions made by the artists and totally denies the action [role] played by the critics in the history of art. Although no one could deny the fact that it is the artists who create the artwork which has the lasting value, and, sometimes, the creativity of the artists are oppressed by the critics, it is unfair to overlook the impetus which the critics bring to the society.

First of all, it is the artworks [that] created by the artists, no matter what forms they are [in,] such as music, painting, literature, etc, possess the art value. If there is no artwork, there is no carrier of lasting value, and no critics will be able to address their criticism, thus no possible value to the society could exist. In the history of art, artists could still create artwork without critics while there is no critic if there is no artist. This circumstance has especially apparent in the medieval [time] when numerous artistic works have been engaged without any consideration of the contemporary people and few of them draws comments from the critics.

It is the critics’ duty to point [out] the further meaning of the artworks. Let us take a famous ancient Chinese fiction-- A Dream of Red Mansions--for illustration. The author Cao xueqing revealed the trend of feudalism society in China by describing several aristocrats; however, the readers are easily immersed in the details of this fiction, and there came an academy association of A Dream of Red Mansion whose fellows are devoted to exploit the further meaning of this fiction.
