Issue47(532words, 40mins)
"Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
It is a common phenomenon that the intelligent are put in a high position in a society. When we debate on the issue that whether a society places enough emphasis on the intellect, concluding the capacities to reason and other cognitive skills, we might fall into dilemma that what degree is appropriate. In my point of view, the level of emphasis our society put on intellect is overdone to some distance.
First and foremost, a majority of economy sectors have a high requirement of one's intellect. We can find supporting examples everywhere, from the business corporation to public organizations. For a specific example, when a company or government make a plan to employ new clients, an exam will be held, meanwhile, a face-to-face interview would be given. To trace the essential purpose of these activities, the company might want to test the applicants' intellect: if they can understand what the questions mean, react quickly, make a thorough response, view a subject or a problem in a complete or at least extensive perspective, they are supposed to acquire a good cognitive skills. Furthermore, if the applicants can question the interviewers precisely, they are incline to have excellent faculties to reason, which might be a requisite for a logic and rational thinking.
Secondly, the public expect its future generation to be intelligent and invest so much energy and resource to shape an intelligent. It is common that both the government and parents invest a great amount of money into education, with a hope to educate the further generation to be intelligent and thus live a decent life, do contribution to the development of the society, or even innovate new technology to increase the utility of the whole society. We can see the emphasis from the curriculums of the school. The main course are unexceptional intellect related: verbal- to make students understand others correctly; mathematics- to make them think logically; history- to provide them a historic perspective in order to reason or explain for present facts; art- to lead them cognize the world, including the concrete world and abstract world more deeply and extensively.
Last but not least, other qualities which help shape a great person has been neglected or put into a secondary place. From the above instance, there is no sign of emphasis on emotion quality, including persistence, loyalty, honesty, faith, courage, openness to democracy, freedom and equity. Although we can not test or teacher such personality and morality in a direct and efficient way, we can set examples to transmit these expected emotional qualities. If the members of a society have a lot of mental problems, the solidity of the society would undermine for it is possible that mental disease would lead to high crime inclination.
Admittedly, it is hard to find an appropriate method to measure it. However, neither should we neglect the importance of it, nor should we put far less emphasis on it. What we should keep in mind always is that well-round and healthy development is crucial for human beings. Not only should we try to be as wise as possible, we should also practice our emotional quality, which play a key role in the process to success. |
