Issue29(649words, 45mins)
"Public figures such as actors, politicians, and athletes should expect people to be interested in their private lives. When they seek a public role, they should expect that they will lose at least some of their privacy."
When we debate on the sensitive issue on the protection of privacy, there is a group of people who we may always tend to ignore- public figures. They conclude actors, politicians, athletes etc. Some one may persist we should also protect the privacy of them; while some may insist that they should expect the loss of their privacy beforehand. Though careful analysis, I hold the position that public figures should expect the loss of privacy, while the public should not pay too much attention to their privacy.
First and foremost, the definition of "public" contains the loss of privacy to some degree. If someone wants to be public, that means he/she hope to be known by more and more persons ,including not only his/her remote relatives, the people living in the same community, but also the citizens in his/her city, province and nation. To make up a reputation is a process to be public and famous, to make one's capacity, habits, personality and other aspects known by as many people as possible. It is a process to become a celebrity; meanwhile, it is also a process to lose one's privacy to some degree. For a specific example, Mike Jordon is one of the most famous and excellent basketball play in NBA. Admittedly, his skills are the crucial factor to make up his reputation, yet, when he became a public figure, the media will not only cover the games he takes part in, but also his private life in his spare time- how he relaxes, how he entertains, what brands of products he uses, who he makes friends with. The public might want to view him as a model to educate the future generation. Consequently, the more privacy is showed to public, the more aspects we would know. And since the privacy is more familiar for the mass, we can educate the children on the daily-life aspects from the revealed information.
Secondly, it is a major method for public figures to build up and maintain their reputation. We should admit that a number of the public figures take the privacy as a way to gain more attention from the public. It is a strategy that makes full use of psychology of the public. It is quite likely that with the development of technology and society, the interpersonal relation gets loosen and people feel more aloof to others. In order to find a common topic to start a communication effectively and efficiently, we can talk about the public figures who would be known by both sides of communicators. As a result, the public figure's privacy might be mentioned as a topic to imply an ethics or moral problems. Common sense tells us that the more we pay attention to someone, the more famous he/she would be. It is through create some accidents or other provoke issues that may oneself known by more citizens or make the impression of oneself deep in people's minds.
However, the mass might not give much emphasis on the privacy and should respect the individuals' civil rights. As a legislative citizen, public figures own certain rights to protect their privacy, although the degree of privacy to be held from the public would be lower. The public should concerned more about the feeling of these figures and not to annoy them excessively. Take Danna for example. Her death has a lot to do with the media's following. If the public pay less interests on her privacy, the media might not follow her private life, and the disaster might not had happened.
All in all, we shoot for the protection of our own privacy, we should concern the privacy of the public figures. It is reasonable for us to desire to know about their privacy and for them to make use of privacy to be well-known. However, we should respect and admire their civil rights as a legislative citizen. |
