29,When Ida McAllister ran for mayor of Lake City four years ago, she failed to win even 30 percent of the vote. But since then, McAllister has made public her commitment to environmental causes. She would be wise, therefore, to announce her intention to close all Lake City parks to automobile traffic, thus following the example of the former mayor of Plainsville, Alecia Yu . On the recommendation of a small group of concerned citizens, Mayor Yu prohibited automobile traffic in all Plainsville parks, and therefore was credited with solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of life in Plainsville. This action would have great appeal to the citizens of Lake City, most of whom participate in the community's recycling program, and would guarantee McAllister's success in her current quest to be Lake City's new mayor.
In the argument above, the arguer claim that the Ida Mcallister (M ) would win the mayor election. To support the arguer's argument, the arguer think that following the example of the former mayor of Plainsville, Alecia Yu(Yu), it would be successful to solve the pollution problem and improve the quality of life in Plainsville. Nevertheless, with a careful examination, there are any logic flows in this argument which would undermine the arguer's claim.
First of all, the arguer show that the recommendation was advocated by a small group of concerned citizens. In this regard, the very evidence is too little to convince us the representativeness of the small groups of concerned citizens. It is very possible that a lot of people in Plainsville are against such recommendation even though they selected Yu their mayor. Or there are many other merit which appeal more voters to choose Yu the mayor of Plainsville. If the arguer does not rule out any other reasons why Yu win the mayor election in Plainsville, the argument's recommendation would be groundless.
Secondly, another main logic flaw with the argument is that, even assuming the assumption above is correct, the arguer unfairly assume that the situation and background of Plainsville are similar to that of Lack city. As a matter of fact, the successful experience that Yu, the former mayor of Plainsville who prohibited automobile traffic in all Plainsville parks and solve the pollution problem and improving the quality of life in Plainsivlle could not necessarily success in Lack city. Also, The arguer not only show that the mayor's recommendation of any pollution problems and the qualify of life in Lack city are important factors that affect the choice of the mayor. If so, we could claimed that the quality of life and pollution problem are in good condition in Lack City and any commitment to environment would not appeal to the citizens of Lack city.
Last but not least, even assuming such action have great appeal to the citizens of lack city, most of whom participate in the community's recycling program would Guarantee M success in her current quest to be Lack City's new mayor does not mean that most population in Lack city would do so. Since people participating the community's recycling program are most environment protectionists and they are especially concerned about the pollution problem. As a matter of fact, we can say that most of the common citizens do not worry about the problem of pollution in Lake city, or what they concern most is employment, social welfare and etc. The arguer's hasty generalization would be unpersuasive.
In summary, the argument is not well reasoning and lacking credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the argument maintains. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer should have to provide more information about the causes of last lose of M in the last mayor election, thus give any practical suggestions that M could succeed in her current quest to be Lack City's new mayor. |
