Generally, I disagree with the statement of the topic, though I have to concede the fact that there is an element of truth in both its contentions. The appearance and behavior can indeed reflects some common information about the interest and attitude of a person or the culture of a society; however, it’s insufficient to thoroughly understand the whole characters of a society’s value.
In modern society people tends to judge a stranger form their (注意单复数)dress and behavior, which is an efficient way for the people who have no enough time to make deep communication with each other. Obviously, the dress and behavior have some relation (s) with their characters and careers, for instance, those who are strict for themselves are more likely to choose the clothes in dim colors, while those who are energetic are apt to be in fresh colors. Another example is that the people who work in formal circumstances always wear ties and suits, for example, those officers and managers; on the contrary, those whose work place are more casual tend to wear jeans and T shirts. Thus, people have learned to infer one’s characters and careers from their dresses and behaviors.
Though the way is an efficient way, which can be chosen when the time allowed for a communication is limited, it is not necessarily an effective way. The interviewers often find themselves trapped in the confusion that the appearance and even a short time of communication always conceal the characters and abilities of an interviewee, if the person has prepared for the interview carefully, even though they have developed a series of ways to avoid such problem. The experience also have told us that there are always some times when we find the fact that a person expected to be kind and honesty turn out to be an unbelievable guy. It is also impossible that an excellent person is misunderstood by his or her terrible appearances. So unbelievable and ineffective is the judgment from one’s appearance, that we can never entirely depend on the dress or behavior to judge a person.
For the value of a society, which is a more complex system, the judgment only from observation of its people’s appearance and behavior is far from the truth. A society’s culture and value are mainly reflected by its history, arts, language and the customs. History, a log of a society’s development, contains a great mass of information and the close studies about it can help us to comprehend a society history. Art works, which make detail descriptions of the emotions of the characters, reveal the belief and value cherished by its people. Language, which serves as the media of the society’s communication, also reflects the way people response to a factor and the way they treat others. For example, a concise language without a great many of varieties, may imply that the people who use it are more likely to be straightforward as a whole. Without a thorough study about the above aspects, which are essential for the understanding of the culture, a foreigner is impossible to make a whole description of a society.
Those who hold the belief that the observation of the appearance and behavior of a society’s people could tell much about the society’s ideas and values mainly consider the fact that it plays an crucial role in the understanding of a society’s customs and language; however the observation itself can not explain many phenomena. In a scenario that a person who find that people in some area of china wear white clothes when a relative dies, the observer may think that they are happy for the relative’s death, if he or she is from a western country where white clothes are usually wore in a marriage ceremony. So only when an observer has some knowledge about the background of a phenomenon, he or she might understand it correctly.
In sum, an appearance can be explained by many different reasons; consequently, it seems impossible to determine which reason is the main cause, without an understanding of its background. A person who wears a tie and suit may be about to attend a formal dinner; or because of his job is an office. How can we make a hasty conclusion that he is an officer? Partially as the appearance and behavior reflect the ideas and value of an individual or a society, the conclusions based on the observation about them are unreliable.(我的很水的水平看了一下, 搂主的内容很充实,例子觉得很丰富,文章也写得很长, 语法上有很多单复数没有注意到,楼主以后要注意这些小问题,我标出了一些, 整篇文章得感觉是我自己看了觉得有点复杂,我觉得第五段完全可以不用,当然这只是我个人观点,其实写得多不是坏事,只是我们考试时间有限,应该在有限得时间内更突出我们得观点.少烦原则错误) |
