Issue 186: Practicality is now our great idol, which all power and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.

"Why should I learn this? What can I get from reciting all those meaningless poets?" Often too surprised hearing pupils' such questions, we have to admit the author's argument, willingly or not, even children pay attention to practicality when they are educated. Not only in education, but also in business, but in people's everyday endeavors, practicality has become the main consideration interfering one's decision. In this sense, practicality is our idol, with unseen negative influence on us.

A proof of this lies in my own experience in the process of choosing major in college. My grandfather was a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. Living with him in childhood and amazed by its marvelous effect, I cultivated great interests in Chinese traditional medicine and made my mind to become a doctor like my grandfather. However, when choosing major, my teacher and parents strongly advised me against my resolution just because it was not a practical major at that time. Consequently, I abandoned a dream made in childhood and chose another more "practical" major. Not only me, but numerous students abject their individual interests for the well-known reason.

It is particularly the case in business, whose objective is to make profit. When a product is designed, the primary consideration is whether it will be (will it be: wrong!) popular among its potential customers. To achieve this aim, the designers have to take into account whether the quality, performance and price are suitable for future customers. More often that not, they do not apply the most advanced technology, although are capable of doing so, simply for the reason that the new technology is too costing and the customers currently do not need such powerful products. Take the computers as an example. Computers are all 32 bites worldwide, however, a new technology of 64 bite that will make computers faster and more powerful has been invented long ago. The reason explained above account for why the computer producers, as IBM, Combat, do not apply the 64 bits in her products. Therefore, in some sense, we can safely say that the 64 bits technology has little value at least presently for computer producers because it can not make any profits.

Admittedly, these phenomena are well reasonable. According to Florid, a person has to firstly satisfy his basic physiological need, and then can he consider other needs as interests, emotion and reputation. Therefore, people automatically seek practical things that have value for them. Nevertheless, such sought will inevitably make people short sighted, in consequence, will harm their long term benefits.

When capitalist took up its improvement, industrialists and thus the government, emphasized too much on the rapid development of industry and profit-making. With the development of industry, increasing areas were polluted. Yet no agenda was put forward to prevent the earth from pollution for at that time, doing so seemed to be of little importance. When they became to realize the significance of preventing pollution it was already too more costing and pain-taking than before.

However, the argument is too pessimistic about today's world. People do many things nowadays, which is not practically valuable. In China, every spring, many people will go to the fields to plant trees. The number of young volunteers is increasing every year, a strong evidence showing thay young people are willing to help those strangers who are in need.

Although reasons are there to explain practicality, and phenomena prove its existence, shortcomings of it should be taken it account and immediate measures needs to be taken to reverse the trend.

1.        Academics: muffle the invention, innovation
2.        Business: in the long term, ignore the environment
3.        Political field: too much emphases on Practicalism will result in the short-sight. Use public resource to serve one’s own interest.随便挑我的一篇改改,提点建设性意见,我都很感谢你的
