According to the title of the statement, the speaker assertsthat only when works of art have been understood by most people, the works havemerit. In my opinion,
I do not agree with the speaker's assertion. Because themerit of art is not evaluated by the number of people who understand it, andartistic works which are understood by most people would have no merit butwhich are understood by minorities would have high merit.

First of all, the merit of artistic works is not judged bywhether it can be understood by most people. The work of art is merit when itrepresent the artist's emotion and
spirit, when it can move other people no matter how manypeople have been moved, when it manifest the aesthetic value, when it arosepeople's imagination. In short, whether works of art have merit or not is notconnected with how many people understand it.

Second, if artistic works are understood and accepted bymost people, they may have merit. We can take pop music as an example. Popmusic is easy to remember and sing
by average people, they can make people feel relaxed. Sopeople like listening it, then
pop music has its merit. Cartoons, comedies, novels, allthese artistic works are accepted and understood by most people and they alsohave merit.

Third, another possibility is that some artistic works haveno merit even they are
understood by most people. For example, almost every oneunderstand what is blue films, but we can not claim that blue films have merit. The reason is that blue films can not manifest healthy aesthetic value, it cannot give healthy entertainment to people, it is even harmful to immature peoplelike teenagers for it can make them pay attention to sex and arose them to dosome not rational things. From this example, we should come to that art worksunderstood by most people may not have merit .

Forth, even some artistic works are only understood byminorities, they may also have merit. There are two main reasons why many kindsof art works in our world can not be understood. First reason is differentculture background impede people’s understanding of some art works which iscreated in another culture background. For instance, jazz and blues are twokinds of music invited from western countries that they can not be understoodand by most oriental people. But we can not say that these two kinds of  music have no merit. On the contrary, PekingOpera come from china which has litter understanding in countries out of china. We still should not give the judgement that Peking Opera have no merit. Secondreason is about one's appreciate ability. Classic music and abstract paintingand sculpture can only be understood by a few high qualified
critics and artists in their field, but these works may havehigh merit.

To sum up, from what have been discussed above, we caneasily draw the conclusion
that whether works of art can be understood by mostpeople or not, they can have merit.

According to the title of(可以去掉) the statement, the speaker asserts that only when works of art have been understood by most people, the works have merit. In my opinion however, I do not agree(觉得有些重复) with the speaker's assertion. Because(可以考虑把in my opinion用在这儿) the merit of art is not evaluated by the number of people who understand it, and artistic works which are understood by most people would have no merit but which are understood by minorities would have high merit.

First of all, the merit of artistic works is not judged by whether it can be understood by most people. The work of art is merit when it represent the artist's emotion and spirit, when it can move other people no matter how many people have been moved, when it manifests the aesthetic value, and also when it aroses people’s imagination. In short, whether works of art have merit or not is not connected with how many people understand it.

Second, admittedly,(感觉很突兀 没有衔接好) if artistic works are understood and accepted by most people, they may have merit. We can take pop music as an example. Pop music is easy to remember and sing by average people, they can make people feel relaxed. So people like listening it, then pop music has its merit. Cartoons, comedies, novels, all these artistic works are accepted and understood by most people and they also have merit.

Third, another possibility is that some artistic works have no merit even they are understood by most people. For example, almost every one understand(s) what is(are) blue films, but we can not claim that blue films have merit. The reason is that blue films can not manifest healthy aesthetic value, it cannot give healthy entertainment to people, andit is even harmful to immature people like teenagers for it can make them pay attention to sex and arose them to do some not rational things. From this example, we should come to that art works understood by most people may not have merit.(二三段形成对比但和第一段没衔接好 换一下连接词就好了)

Forth, even if some artistic works are only understood by minorities, they may also have merit. There are two main reasons why many kinds of art works in our world can not be understood. First reason is different culture background impeding people’s understanding of some art works which is created in another culture background. For instance, jazz and blues are two kinds of music invited from western countries that they can not be understood and by most oriental people. But we can not say that these two kinds of music have no merit. On the contrary, Peking Opera come from china which has litter understanding in countries out of china. We still should not give the judgement(judgment) that Peking Opera have no merit. The Second reason is about one's appreciate(appreciating) ability. Classic music and abstract painting and sculpture can only be understood by a few high qualified critics and artists in their field, but these works may have high merit.

To sum up, from what have been discussed above, we can easily draw the conclusion that whether works of art can be understood by most people or not, they can(may) have merit.
总体论证充分 但文章衔接的不够好 有些地方语言还是不够准确
