TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The memo advised all chains of cheese stores discontinue stocking many existing varieties of imported cheese, based on last years top 5 best-selling cheeses being domestic at the newest chain stores and the indication of a survey which is held by a magazine. The writer of the memo believed that this measure would reduce expenses of stocking, hence make a profit. However, the evidences were definitely insufficient to make such a judgement.

Let's check the item of the best-sellings. Notice the phrase "at our newest store"(special attention, singular form of the word "store"), which indicates to the fact that we merely have evidences that customers of the newest store seemed to prefer domestic cheeses. What about customers of other stores? Be aware that the memo argues that all stores, not only the newest one,  should discontinue stocking of imported cheeses. Such an evidence is definitely insufficient for the situation of all stores.

What's more, survey held by the magazine could be rather misleading, not to mention its indication. How wide is the range the magazine spreads? How is the survey designed? How many respondence? How's the distribution of respondence (as may have little overlap with the stores distribution)? And how to indicate an increasing preference? Those are the informations necessary for a judgement, however unprovided by the memo. That makes the judgement unreliable as well.

Therefore, such a judgement of customers being more interested in domestic cheeses couldn't be a very good one. As consequences that all the doubt stands, company may suffer a loss if they take measures of limiting inventory of imported cheeses as the writer proposed, since they may not satisfy customers' need on import cheeses. As it is only a paragraph appeared in the memo, there may be additional evidences not shown in the segment. But only judge the situation by these is definitely faulty.
