Upon reflection, it’s really a good idea to experience several different jobs before one starts his or her long term career. Shifting from job to job is not that unadvisable as it seems to be if it is done upon careful contemplation. Rather, it is in fact a wise choice in most cases for the following considerations.

People need a process, whether long or short, to have a general understanding of jobs and themselves—what their strengths and weaknesses are, in which field they can best stretch themselves or what they really want. As we know, different positions require different talents, and thus different sorts of human resources. Therefore, people need to choose one in which they can best take advantage of their talents. But in most cases, one can rarely get to know a job well unless they have tried. A young man with good academic records may think himself as borne to be a teacher. But later on, he may end up finding that teaching is too repeating for him and cannot suffice his ambition. Before we get into a job, our knowledge about the job and ourselves may not be sufficient and objective enough to help us make a wise choice. Thus, to finally get the optimal position, we need to try several “experiments” at first.

Different jobs afford us different outlooks of life and different experiences. That is to say, by trying different jobs, we can meet with more possibilities, more challenges and more people from different backgrounds, thus making our life more colorful. If we just take one job for our entire life, we are much likely to find our life monotonous, just like a written computer program—every day we deal with the same kind of problems applying the same solutions with the same group of people and we have no idea what people from outside are doing. As time passes, our thoughts would be confined to our little world. But if we have tried different kinds of jobs, we may analyze things from several different angles and see the whole world. Therefore, different working experiences can help us develop our field of vision.

Some people may argue that life is too short, so we should not waste time changing jobs. But the truth is, yes, life is too short, so we need to take the time to find out what we really want from inside and what kind of job is most appropriate for us and can afford us with self-satisfaction. Otherwise, we may sacrifice our entire lifetime for a job we do not love. Life is too short, so we need to treat ourselves better and choose to do something that we really want from inside.

From the above discussion, we can see that in order to find the most suitable job to us and expand our outlook, there is a strong need for us to experience several different jobs before we take our long term career.
