The reading passage point out a trend that young people read less literature than before, which would exert negative influence on culture. By challenging the statement in the reading passages, the professor listing contradictory reasons to the reading.

First, in the reading, some may think without the stimulation of literature, people would have less imaginations. The professor refute the statement by explain that without the stimulation of literature, there are also other kinds of books, such as science writing, history, political analysis, which could help people improve their imagination.


    Second, in the reading, another reason that some consider people use more time on other entertainment such as watching TV. In the lecture, the professor pointed out although people use less time reading literature, it does not mean the declination of culture. Because the culture have changed today, there are many forms of culture, so it doesn't mean that people listening music and watching movie represent the declination of culture.

Finally, in the reading, it is considered that the trend of reading less literature is due to lack of audience for talented writers, which cause that the publishers’ reducing investment. The professor argues that there might the authors’ fault since their works are too difficult to understand ,which loses their readers.
