Popular arts of music, film, advertising and television are greatly favored by today’s colleges and university students and yet there are not courses on these are available and most of the time students have to acquire the knowledge by themselves. Some people suggest that the university should offer more courses on these contemporary cultures and cut courses of arts and literature of the past because the latter are of less relevance for students. This suggestion does not stand careful examination because the arts and literature of all times, even those of the past, are of great value to students.


It is true that more courses of contemporary cultures should be offered to the students. The college and university students are characterized by readiness to accept new ideas and eagerness to know the outside world of colleges of ivory tower. Popular music, film, advertising and television programs offer what the students need by providing an excellent channel to learn about the society by depicting the current affairs and the mood of the times. But not all of the contemporary culture on the mass media will benefit the students. To make more money and attract more audience, the mass media sometimes produces low-quality programs which may be not suitable to students, for instance, the pornography. At the same time, the students sometimes find hard to interpret the current affairs. If the university could offer courses on these popular arts, the teachers can provide some guidance on best appreciate the valuable part of the popular culture and guard against the harmful aspects.

Along with the high priority of providing more courses on popular cultures, however, we can never claim that arts and literature are of little relevance to the students. Art is a general term which covers a variety of subjects of literature (novels, dramas, poetry), painting, sculpture, dancing and crafts. It is everlasting and can never be out of date because it deals with the very fundamental issue of human existence. By employing various forms of expression, artists of different times depict the issue of human emotions and spirits of love, failure, death and chase of dreams. Since the day of its existence, the human being has always been exploring these issues, with no exception with the present-day college and university students.

The university students today care not only the fashion, the top news and events in the society, they also long for the balance of inner self and the outer society and would like to know what the meaning of life is. Art is an excellent way to explore these issues. This is especially true with the literature. Authors of different times and races depict what their own society and life are and add their own understanding and ways to deal with the complexity of the life. When the students confront hardship or puzzle, by reading the literature, they may find reflection of their own experience, emotions and this may shed light to some kind of solution. Several years ago, the novel titled Life by the famous Chinese writer Luyao was especially popular among college students. A large of this novel depicts the life and struggle of a young named Sun Shaoping along the way to success. Sun is of the similar age with the college students and some of his experience is quite typical among college students. By reading this novel, students easily share with the happiness and sorrows with this young and brave man and are more inspired to conquer the world and best appreciate life as he does. According to a survey by the magazine Chinese Reader, even today, more than 10 years after its publication, this book is still considered one of the most influential books among college students.

To help students learn the popular trend of a society and keep pace with the time, the colleges and universities need to offer more courses on popular cultures. While along with this, the education on arts and literature should by no means be neglected for they offer the peace of our mind and provide endless encouragement and impetus for our life to continue.

那个survey是不是离课程有点远了,不是很有必要。有一个小的疑问：举的例子是不是也是当代文化的一种？举个离现在久一点的例子可能更合适。第一个正文注意到了时间的概念。到这一段，只有艺术，没有时间。愚见。恩恩
