Innovation is always attached great importance in human civilization. In the long river of history, countless individuals, with their enterprise and unique perception, have resulted in true innovation. This fact can never be neglected. However, in this modern world of complexity and changeability more often it is the teamwork of a group of people that gives stronger impetus to innovation.

Admittedly, individual work alone can lead to brilliant innovations. With strong personal interests and determination, many people can delve deep into a particular field and gradually work out unique observations that may lead to invaluable discoveries. For instance, out of his interests in the universe and many years’ individual research, Copernicus concluded that the earth could not be the centre of the universe. His findings heavily stroke the dominant religious earth-centre theories at that time and enlightened the later scientists to begin to search for the truth of the universe. The individual work of many other geniuses like Einstein, Newton and Edison has also resulted in various discoveries and inventions. Indeed, their contributions to the human civilization can never be ignored.


However, in this era of information and industrialization, the world is too complicated and changeable for the individuals alone to bring about innovations. More often we have to rely on teams to deal with problems and provide innovative solutions. No matte from the aspects of experience, intellect or the financial and human resources, the individual can not compete with a group to yield rewarding and efficient innovations. The field of astronomy is an excellent example. Starting from the 20th century, human beings began to explore the space dream of walking on the Moon or other planets. This kind of projects can only be properly carried out by the large-scale teams. Sometimes it has to involve scientists of various nations to put their efforts together to make real big breakthroughs. If left to individuals, these projects could only fail.

Actually teamwork has become a popular trend in present days and people are heavily relying on for innovations. No matter in researches or in reality, it is put higher priority than before. In the medical field, governments have realized how efficient it is to organize a team to focus on the severe and stubborn disease like SARS or Aids. It not only requires each professional in the team to provide their knowledge of different fields to control the disease and promote its progress, but millions of medical workers, even the whole society to work strenuously to effectively eliminate it. In the practical business world, teamwork is practiced not only within the company, but among corporations. Brainstorming is popular in companies because a team of several people, who are experts in different fields, like marketing, sales, human resources, and finance can provide genuine views from different perspectives to ensure a faultless strategy to avoid losing money. Many large corporations like Boeing and GE sometimes have to work together to solve some of the engine problems because they both boast experts of different fields and can shed light on each other to work out a perfect solution. This kind of teamwork actually benefits all parties involved.

To conclude, innovations can be brought about by individual work alone. However in the present society, it is more the teamwork exerting greater impetus on the progress of human civilization. Thus the latter, instead of the former, could be claimed as the stronger force to promote innovation.
