The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
'A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin.'

By citing the survey of using the Luxess cream, the argument concludes that the Luxess cream improve greatly the participants and therefore is sure to improve the condition of skin. However, rhere are some logical flaws in the argument. Is the survey reliable? What about other factors that have great influence on the improvement of skin?Does the improvement in the survey necessarily indicate the improvement of the condition of skin?

To begin with, the argument might be unreliable in many respects. First of all, the argument says nothing about participants and their condition of skin before the study. We don't know the age bracket of the participants. Is the study broad enough ?It is possible the study include only one special age bracket like 25 to 35 rather all the possible people who need to improve the skin.  This cream might not be suitable for other people because the cream has some harmful side-effect on their skins. Secondly, the condition of skin of the participants is also important. If the participants' condition of skin is much unsatisfying, tough and dry, the cream might improve their skin during a short time. Thirdly, the volunteers' report might not be unconvincing. It is possible that the free gifts of this survey induce them to make an unjustifiable report on their skins. They might not get the free award from the study if they don't report the remarked improvement on their skins' condition.

In addition, one month might not be enough amount of time to show whether the cream is effective. Even the argument mentioned that their skin looked and felt much better than before in the volunteers’ report, it is likely that the effect is a temporary show. After all, improve the skin is not a easy task, which need to take several years to work for it. For that reason, it might be the case that the effect is very good in the first month, but is undermined after several months using the Luxess cream and no further effect at all.

Even assuming that the study is statistically proven, there might be other alternative reasons for the improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. The argument provides no evidence to show the function of the soap it mentions. The soap might contribute greatly to the marked effect. Even there is no link between the soap and the following effect, the food and exercises might be very useful for improving our skin. Perhaps in this one month, the participants eat a lot of vegetable, eat so many fruits like tomatoes and cucumber, and drink more water everyday. Or perhaps they take some effective medicines for improving their skins. Or perhaps the sun light is the actual reason for the improved skin. The sun might hurt the skin greatly and the volunteers avoid the sun light when they are out or even stay home in process of the study.  

Finally, nor the argument justify that the improvement in the survey truly indicate the improvement of the condition of facial skin. The condition of skin includes many aspects. Does the cream have any effect on the freckle? If not, we are not convinced that the cream indeed improve the condition of skins.

To sum up, before the conclusion whether the cream truly improve the condition of the skin is made, more thorough  investigation on proving every specific detail of  the survey might be helpful. To strengthen the argument, it should provide clearer evidence to ruling out the other possible reasons for the effect in the study .We also need know whether the alleged marked effect of the study on the skin includes most aspects of condition of skin.
