'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'

What are listed in the report cannot logically demonstrates both of  Professor Thomas' teaching and research ability, and cannot effectively support the speaker's assertion that Professor Thomas should receive a raise in her salary and a promotion to Department Chairperson.

To begin with, just that the classes of the Professor are among the largest at the university does not precludes her strong teaching ability. Her classes may be one of the required classes to all the students in department of botany, which has the largest number of the students in the elm university. Or it is also entirely possible that lots of students attend her classes just because she is a professor who does not restrict with students and always give the students a quit high grade in their examination. Unless it is mentioned in the article that the students who choose her classes are fascinated with her teaching art, I cannot conclude that Professor Thermos has a strong teaching ability.

In the second place, the fact that the research grants brought by Professor Thomas have exceeded her salary in each of the last two years also cannot preclude her strong ability in research. Given Thomas has been professor for 17 years and the research of botany need a considerable high monetary devotion, if Professor Thomas merely bring research grants which exceed her salary--$50,000 a little, we still cannot recognize Professor Thomas has a strong research ability.

Thirdly, even if we accept that Professor Thomas is a good professor with a strong ability in both teaching and researching, this does not mean that she is the best candidate for Department Chairperson. In fact to be the Department Chairperson, the one should not only be the leading card in both teaching and researching, but also need to own a strong ability of leadership, which, to some extent, is more important than the researching and teaching ability. If there are some persons in her department are suitable for this position, or Professor Thomas has little interest in the leadership, then we cannot give her the promotion to Department Chairperson

Finally, the salary raise and the position promotion cannot promise that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college. If she is very satisfied with all the aspects in the university and do not want to leave here, or there is no other colleges having the interests to her, I think she would stay at Elm City University. To the contrast, if she do not satisfy with the research condition at there at all and expect to go to other college which can provide her the excellent research condition, then 10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson would have little impact on her decision.

To sum up, before give Professor Thomas the salary raise and position promotion to fascinate her continuing her job here, lots of logical and detailed information is needed.
