Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

How to evaluate the function of the nonmainstream sciences, such as astrology fortune-telling, to our society? As far as I concerned, those inquiries serves as the temporary satisfaction and consolation only in the spirit level, and never take any material progress to us.

To begin with, the nonmainsrteam areas of inquiries temporarily satisfy the humans insatiable appetite for the knowledge from the unknown world, to which the mainstream science can not give the rational explanation. We live in the universe, which is so large and complex that only depending on the limited mainstream academic study we cannot satisfy human beings' infinite curiosity to the universal environment they live in. So, although to some extent that from the view of the mainstream scientist, the nonmainstream explanation to the unknown academic world seems as the ridiculous fantasy, we can still find a temporary answer to our questions. For example, for a long time, human beings are very urgent to proof whether there is a concrete relationship between human characters and their birth. However, we do not have enough knowledge and equipment to testify this relationship. Maybe, one day, depending on the fast development of the biology and astronomy, we could find this relation, but nowadays, what can we do is merely from the astrology to get the unclear answer to this problem. So, we can get a temporary satisfaction to our curiosities which can not be solved by the mainstream science.

In the second place, the inquiry of the nonmaistream areas gives us consolation when we meet some catastrophes which might not be solved by the science. For those people who have been significantly impacted by the unsolved sufferings, what they need might be the consolation from nonmainstream inquiries but not the rational and cruel scientific factors. For example, consider the patient who was stricken by the terminal cancer, the illness without any treatment. Compared with mercilessly telling the fact that his illness is incurable, the patient would get much consolation from the one who tell his that there will be a paranormal power would help you, and the live would continue in another world. Accordingly, we can get consolation from the nonemainstream areas when we meet some disasters that can not be solved by the science.

On the other hand, the satisfaction of our appetite for knowledge and the consolation to us are merely limited to the spirit and might not take any practical progress to our society. Those nonmainstream inquiries and research mostly pursuits the paranormal things and the unrealistic psychic concerns, both of which are far away from our practical lives. For example, the astrology, which can tell us the general character of people born in the same period, always provide us the unclear and abstract theories rather than powerful and substantial evidences to support its conclusion. The fortune-telling may consoles people stricken by the terminal cancer , but cannot never serve as one of the main treatments for cancers. So, we might get some spirit satisfaction and consolation from the nonmainstream sciences, but we can never can any practical progress from them, and moreover the excessive belief of them would certainly prevent the social development.

To sum up, in the spirit, we can get satisfaction and consolation from the mainstream sciences, but when it comes to the perceivable and material progress, we can get nothing from it
