“So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.”

Do looking back for an understanding of the past is helpful for the life in the present? The speaker claims so in that the life of today is complex and new and has a considerable difference from the past. I do concede that the world today is high-tech and high-speeded, what we wear, we eat and we talk has totally changed. Yet, when deep down to our heart, it turns out to be that we are still the beings concerning ourselves about the way we live. This contributes to my point: the uderstanding of the past does provide guidance for living in the present.

First, we can never separate from the past to exist in present isolatedly. Viewing the development of human beings as a whole, where we occupy is only a flowing point that is hardly to find its meaning. Philosophers have been entangled with the question for centuries:”The past has gone, the present is losing, and the future hasn’t come. Where are we NOW?” This illustrates that we cannot simplely defined “the past” as a period of time that has died away, but a source that has led us to where we are now.

Psychologically, for the second point, we share universal emotions that are recognized and experienced by all no matter where we stand, in the past or in the present. As I have presented above, we are still the beings concerning the way we live, from what we can easily finger out in which aspect the past provides guidance. For example, how to deal with the relationship between peoples, how much does wealthy contribute to happiness, etc. Actually, everyone benefits from the past intently or potentially throngh some historical stories heard when we are young or by practising some tradition and conventions that have been deliveried from generation to generation. Accept or not, you have already been one of the main carriers.

What’s more, we also guided by the past in the field of science. As Isaac Newton, a great British scientist who lived over 300 years ago, said:” If I have seen further, it is because I stand on the shoulder of gaints.” Though we have steped into 2000s, a world full of informations that essentially defers from the past, the technology of internet which pushed us into digital life is based on the invention of computer created in 1940s. Besides, as well as the inheritance of technical achievement, scientists of today also acquire excellent method from the past giants.

Simplely put, there is a link which should not be overlooked between the past and the present. Psychologically and scientifically, past is a selfless guider for all human beings in the world of a mass of worthless informations.
