ISSUE 180
"Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behavior cannot be legislated."

Whether many problems of modern society can be solved by laws and the legal system? The author’s answer is no with the reason that moral behavior cannot be legislated. I concede that laws or legal system cannot cover all kinds of situations and thoes moral behaviors are especially diffcult to be defined. However, a contrary view has revealed that laws and the legal system can solve most of the social problems of today and has been an important basis of the entire society.

It is true that in some certain situations, laws seems to be inflexible and tough towards individuals who have done something justifiable but illegal; while sometimes laws are considered to have kind of flaws that result in an escape of evils. And also, there exists some immoral behavior that appears to be legal which have had a debatable influence upon the public, exampled by the euthanasia and abortion that involves complex moral and legal problems. When comes to such situations, even laws will fall into a delimma.

Yet, albet the laws and the legal system have such disadvantages, it is, as far as the reality has proved, the best way to conduct the masses and protect most of their interests, so does the law play an significant role to keep the whole society harmonious and stable and offer a peaceful environment for nations to develop. Furthermore, laws are actually set up partly basis on the cultures, the convention and of course the moral traditions, which means most of the moral behaviors, are under the consideration of the legal system. For example, accroding to the law, parents, including stepfather and stepmother, have the obligation to raise their children who are under eighteen; in turn, those adults who are economically independent from their families has also been compelled to contribute to the daily cost of their aged parents: this is of course a morally based law. Here, laws are no longer a cold-blooded rule but a considerative protector of moral good.

With out the laws and legal system, the society will soon be traped in a chaos, much less those moral behaviors. Simplely put, admittedly that laws cannot responsible for all kind of unjust affairs, they can solve most of the modern society’s problems, even involved with some moral behavior.

Whether many problems of modern society can be solved by laws and the legal system? The author’s answer is no with the reason that moral behavior cannot be legislated. I concede that laws or legal system cannot cover all kinds of situations and those moral behaviors are especially difficult to be defined. However, a contrary view has revealed that laws and the legal system can solve most of the social problems of today and has been an important basis of the entire society.

It is true that in some certain situations, laws seem to be inflexible and tough towards individuals who have done something justifiable but illegal(我觉得改成illegal but justifiable更好。 ; while sometimes laws are considered to have kind of flaws that result in an escape of evils. And also, there exists some immoral behavior that appears to be legal which have had a debatable influence upon the public, exampled by the euthanasia and abortion that involves complex moral and legal problems(euthanasia 和abortion应该说只在某些国家是合法的,这里应该提一下,不能所所有法律都一棍子打死。). When comes to such situations, even laws will fall into a dilemma.

Yet, albeit the laws and the legal system have such disadvantages, it is, as far as the reality has proved, the best way to conduct the masses and protect most of their interests, so does the law play an significant role to keep the whole society harmonious and stable and offer a peaceful environment for nations to develop. Furthermore, laws are actually set up partly basis (based) on the cultures, the convention and of course the moral traditions, which mean most of the moral behaviors, are under the consideration of the legal system. For example, according to the law, parents, including stepfather and stepmother, have the obligation to raise their children who are under eighteen; in turn, those adults who are economically independent from their families has also been compelled to contribute to the daily cost of their aged parents: this is of course a morally based on law. Here, laws are no longer a cold-blooded rule but a considerate protector of moral good.

Without the laws and legal system, the society will soon be trapped in a chaos, much less those moral behaviors. Simply put, admittedly that laws cannot be responsible for all kind of unjust affairs, they can solve most of the modern society’s problems, even involved with some moral behavior.
